JD 300 Starter Issues

Post by dikeman »

It started fine first time out this year. Next time we went, it would click a couple times before the starter would roll and start the engine. Last time out, it just clicks when I attempt to start. Pulled the starter off and the starter runs fine direct from a battery on the bench. Assume this must be the solenoid?

When you try to start it, does it engage the bendix? A starter can turn easily on a bench when there is no resistance, but not have enough torque to turn the engine over in the sled. I’m guessing you have a failed winding in the armature.

I have found the solenoids to be somewhat problematic. Sometimes they work, and then they won't, rinse and repeat.
