Diagnosing CDI problems on the Kioritz engines.

If you do not have spark, check the following:
-all grounds are clean and secure and the cdi plug connection to stator is tight
-unplug the main wiring harness from the sled to the engine and check for spark
If you sled ignition wiring has been modified, the white wire was removed from the main harness and connected directly to the black wire to cdi, unhook this and check for spark.
If spark appears after unplugging the harness as mentioned above, plug the main harness back in and:
-unplug the kill switch and try again, if plugs spark, the switch is bad
-unplug the ignition switch and try again, if the plugs spark, the switch is bad
If the spark still does not appear, follow the chart provided by HEWTEC and test the stator/timing ring using a ohm meter. If all tests check out within specs, the cdi is bad.

To test the lighting coil, unplug the main wiring harness from the sled to the engine and test the 2 top slots.

You can test the external ignition coils by using a ohm meter.
To test the coil, measure the ohms between the primary stud terminal and the high voltage spark lead and between the high voltage spark lead and the small grounding wire. I believe 100-300 ohms is an acceptable range. Also test between
the lead to the ground connection to the primary terminal of the coil...it would be from .1 to . 5 ohns.
I have NOS coils that measure out at around 150 ohms. (Picture soon)

I have a 440 Liquifire that has intermediate spark, when it has spark it runs fine. I performed the test procedures from ?Diagnosing CDI problems on the Kioritz engines? post.

With these results:
Low Speed Coil - 1.56 ohms should be 2.7 ohms
High Speed Coil - 71.4 ohms should be 73.9 ohms
PTO Trigger Coil- 29.6 ohms should be 30.0 ohms
Mag Trigger Coil- 30.3 ohms should be 30.0 ohms
Lightning Coil - 0.6 ohms should be 0.6 ohms

Does this mean the low speed coil is bad or is this a CDI problem?

It seems like your numbers are just fine, when I tested my Liquifire most of my numbers were completely out of whack, some where in the mego-ohms but I don't know their accuracy, but when bolted together everything worked fine. I don't know what is causing your problem but I would suggest cleaning your stator to engine connection as well as cdi to stator connections.

Z50MARK,
This was from Scott at Hewtech:
The low speed coil needs to be at least 2.5K-ohms
(2500-ohms~2700-ohms). It's failing and that's the problem. You pull it
enough, the charge will eventually build, then spark. The problem is, the
energy isn't there to continually charge the cDI capacitors for normal
spark.

Hey Rich, can your clutch test with the timing light aid in the actual timing of the engine, at least to get an idea of it? when i did the test on my 77 lf today, i marked clutch right in the middle, but when timing light was shooting on it, mark showed up about 30 degrees clockwise. This engine hasn't been timed and it really runs like crap, probably because of the fact that it is getting spark long before piston is at top of stroke. Am I correct in my observation and should correct timing allow my sled to do more than idle? Thanks

Hi
I'm new to snowmobiling and have picked up an old John Deere 440
Liquifire. The sled has spark in only 1 of the 2 cylinders. I have
replaced the coil with no luck. I have also used the procedure in this forum to diagnose the problem with the results listed below.

Low Speed Coil - 2.64 ohms should be 2.7 ohms
High Speed Coil - 83.5 ohms should be 73.9 ohms
PTO Trigger Coil- 32.5 ohms should be 30.0 ohms
Mag Trigger Coil- 32.2ohms should be 30.0 ohms
Lightning Coil - 1.9 ohms should be 0.6 ohms

The only thing that looks total out of wack is the lightning coil. Is that far off from were it should be?

If not is the CDI bad?

Any help will be greatly appreciated?
Thanks
Mike

sounds like you have checked everything with good results. Many times (not always) when the cdi box starts to go bad, it will produce spark only one 1 side.

Thanks for the quick replies. One of the problems I?m having is identifying exactly what I have the only numbers I can find on the machine is on a certified tag 048907A

If any one can help me with the year that will be a big help.

Thanks again

I have an aftemarket CDI with a tag and numbers on it, I will send out a response tomorrow afternoon on the the numbers I have. This CDI box is bad also.
