1975 300 backshift

Hi I have what I hope is an easily answered question. I have a 1975 300 that I have just put back on the snow. I've cleaned and replaced the entire fuel system including the carburetor and fuel lines. New crank seals and fan belt on the engine. As well as set the timing. The machine starts beautiful...

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

Really hit it hard today. Up at 5, out to the shop and dropped the engine in. I had the engine back together last night but I ran out of gas so to speak... needed some rest. Before I painted the muffler I torched the mouse nest out with the tiger torch. The a blast in the cabinet and some high temp ...

Re: 84 Liquifire Basket Case Restoration

In my opinion,I wouldn't use those. They are going to scratch the heck out of your nicely finished skid when you put them on. I would make some nice spacers out of black delrin that sit on either side of the shock.

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

I cleaned up the clutch yesterday. The spindle on the fixed had quite a bit of rust so I spun it up in the lathe and polished it off with scotchbrite. The spring was blasted and painted. The rest was degreased and the sheave faces deglazed. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2W0D0GZA4hw/VDYPWUcdoEI/...

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

Someone mentioned to me an another forum that this clutch is set up with the incorrect ramp and pucks for a Spitfire. Is this true? Any info? Just wondering how it will perform.

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

OK, my little crisis with the rings is over. The guy agreed to refund my money for the rings and I found someone else with a set of new chrome rings that are on the way. In the meantime I have been picking away at other stuff. I media blasted the exhaust header and repainted with high temp paint. ht...

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

Well, my pistons showed up yesterday and they are fine. The rings are a different story however. I was told they were chrome rings and they are not. I am a little pissed. Does anyone have any 0.01" over chrome rings to sell? I think 0.02" over could be made to fit maybe as well.

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

I have been picking away that the engine all week. The crank and bearings are in very nice shape. Most everything needed a good soaking in the hot tank and a pressure wash. Here are the old pistons. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-v1RsPZ1G-E4/VC6rzlqM6FI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/RhtdRuX0cFE/s640/DSC04575.JPG ...

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

Thanks for all the positivity! I have spent the week cleaning out the engine. Turns out it has been sleeved with cast iron and bored 0.01" over. I did find some oversize pistons and they are on the way. Used muriatic acid to clean the bores and a light hone. They measure up well within spec and...

Re: Broke clutch puller.

In my experience, grease down the hole works best for stubborn clutches that don't want to come off. Pump some grease down the hole, put your puller or a bolt in, and crank away. They pop off every time. No need for an impact or hammers. Hydraulic action at its best.

Re: 1980 Spitfire rehab

Spent the whole afternoon cleaning this thing. Stripped it down, sprayed the whole thing with citrkleen and hit it with the pressure washer. The fuel tank was the worst. Ball bearings and citrikleen then the pressure washer took care of that. A little wax on the hood and new hardware for the windshi...

1980 Spitfire Rehab - All Done

A guy I worked with asked me if I was interested in his old Spitfire. I have kinda always wanted a free air machine and my boy and I have talked about the Spitfire in particular so when the guy asked I said "Sure! How much?" . He responded with "I dunno. How bout a case of beer? I jus...
