intake is /3 covering is /2 at a guess probably a 400. as for the fan comment jd ccw fans were all the same differences were 1 bolt on the top for engine cover and the plastic fan cover. I hate to argue but if jd used /3 and /4 the fans are different I have both and a manual to back it up. go ahead...

Suspension spring cleanup?
lightly blasting springs is fine sand blasting them heavily can sometimes lose tension in springs. Blast them so that have heavy rust removed but are still mostly brown looking paint with rust paint enamel. powder coating is good for furnature not very good on stuff that moves as its brittle.

Burnt Piston in The 600
Raiders used 400 ccw and 440 reed valve mercs used 340/5 but went to 440/22 instead of piston port. There was some other 1 year sleds that used this engine but they are impossible to find.
the /1 series engine is completely different engine cough cough very simular to the kohler 440 cough cough.

How Do I Get the Salsbury Off My '72 500?
i have to ask on the end of clutch is there a 3/8 hole on either side of shaft? there was a couple that were actually screwed on cranks pulling these with a puller will only ruin puller clutch and sometimes crank.
