raccoon in the attic
There is a mild racoon infestation in this area - luckily the last two family dogs have been more than capable of dealing with them. One of the funniest exploits of the previous dog included a coon and a cattle water tank half full. About fifteen years ago, my dad woke up in the middle of the night ...

raccoon in the attic
An avid coon hunting friend of mine claims that two brave (insane) souls and a burlap bag can be effective in removing them from an attic. One guy grabs the coon by the tail, lifts it up at arms length and drops it in the bag that is being held by the other guy. He claims that a coon doesn't have en...

1977 CC Liquifire
All of the information shared about racing John Deere snowmobiles is fascinating (is someone gathering it up for a book???). I recently purchased the following manual "John Deere Cross-Country Snomobile Guide" (SP-294 Issue 17). It is a combination fine-tune manual, parts book, and service...

Factory or aftermarket paint jobs.
In the past year of watching ebay, I have seen several John Deere snowmobiles with non-traditional paint jobs. Most are obviously done by someone prefering pink, purple, flames, etc. However, in the last three months, a 79 trailfire and two 1980 sportfires have been listed with black hoods. All thre...

paint color for green sleds
I appreciate Rich's comments on the change of paint over the years. To take it one step further, In restoring an older JD tractor I purchased a quart of JD red paint (white label - without lead) for the engine and transmission but ran a little short. I bought another can (black and yellow label with...

New Dator owner
Congrats JDX:
I stopped in and visited with the man who sold the dator two weeks before the ebay listing. I saw (and drooled over) the sled you bought and it is an AWESOME original (to the best of my knowledge). I would call the paint exceptional. Enjoy your new purchase.

A John Deere Registry
I am new to the world of JD sleds and would like to know more about production numbers and survival rates of the long green line also. If such information is already available somewhere, please let me know. For some reason, my computer still will NOT open up the serial number page of this web site a...

1984 Sportfire Compression
Thanks for the help all. As a devoted follower of the KISS manual, I started by placing the piston at TDC and putting some carb cleaner in the cylinder. One hour later, it was all gone. On the upside, what can be seen of the piston looks good. I put a little WD40 in the cylinder, turned it over and ...

1984 Sportfire Compression
I purchased a 1984 Sportfire last week. The seller claimed that the sled was very reliable and was driven into the shed where it was parked (four or five years ago) and may start right up. I cleaned the gas tank and carb, replaced a bunch of brittle fuel line, cleaned out the oil reservoir, replaced...

Questions about the serial number system
I have tried several times to open the serial number listing on this web site but my computer refuses to do it. This leaves me to use the listing of serial numbers in the April 1996 Green Magazine as my reference. I understand how the type code works (A=1972, B=1973, 34 or 44 refers to engine size, ...

Sledchad.....I agree with Horicon Joe, the burnt 84 carcass should be revived. I am new to JD sleds but have been collecting the tractor and implement version of the long green line for many years. It takes ALOT of time (maybe years) and effort to collect the parts and restore a rare machine, but he...
