The only chaincase plate I've seen was installed from the bottom/outside. It appeared the pan was smashed before the plate was put on....whether that makes a difference I don't know. Look like lady bugs but are actually Asian Beetles. And yes they smell putrid when squashed. Are similar to box elder bugs in that they congregate on southern facing structures in the fall and work hard to move in doors when cold weather hits. Annoying little creatures.
