my 1973 400 sounds like the drive belt is knocking, also it seemed loose but I'd read before that it should be the almost loose enough to pinch the top and bottom of the belt together. any suggestions as to what is thumping/knocking could be? and of course how to fix it:) thanks

Re: knocking belt
check the belt for missing coggs. Also, check the secondary shaft for bad or loose bearings.

Re: knocking belt
I bought a newer sled that had a notch burned into the belt. The previous owner had a carb plunger in 180 off and hung up, not knowing what they had done they started the sled. Before the sled got away on them, someone grabed the brake and held it untill they got to the kill switch. I bought the sled cleaned the carbs and discoverd this knocking at slower speeds. I friend of mine told me to check the belt for flat spots and sure enough I found one. A new belt fixed the problem.
Old sleds are hours of entertainment.... then you get to ride them for a little bit.
