Tank cleaning

Post by hounds84lhs »

I have 3 Trailfires that sat for a couple of years with gas in the tanks. After I drain the tanks, what is the best solution to clean them with?

Several different options, personally not sure if there is one best solution...fresh gas, pinesol, diesel, etc to soften crude and an old chain, bolts, etc to shake around and agitate/break loose the crude. Sometimes a hot steam pressure washer is all that is necessary. Carbs will be varnished up as well. A good gallon of carb cleaner with a dip basket will do the trick.

I had a good layer of gunk in my tank after the sled was sitting for 15 years. I tried several different combinations of chemicals, but in the end I found Acetone and ~1,500 BBs worked the best. It took about 5 days of soaking with periodic shaking and my tank was squeaky clean.

I have always used a pressure washer to knock the crud out of a plastic tank. If there is a heavy build up of crud in the tank I would try Pine-Sol as I have herd good things and I don't see any way that it could hurt the tank.

First thing is to dump the tank and see what you are dealing with. Take it to the car wash turn it to soap and stick the gun in the tank for the first step. You will take the loose stuff out and get a better idea of what you have. You might have a decent tank after you wash it out.
