1972 JD500 question
1972 JD500 question
This machine has no voltage regulator on it, is that correct? Where can I find a 60 watt round headlamp for this sled? ( 5 3/4 ") diameter.
Thanks!

Re: 1972 JD500 question
Tim,
It should have a regular somewhere on the chassis, or they will overvoltage and blow the lights. If you have a round headlight, you either have a 73-74 sled, hood, or dash. I believe the 73's started at S/N 11,000. You should be able to purchase that lamp most anywhere, as it was the standard size for a 4 lamp automotive system. The heavy duty units do last longer and take the vibration better.

Re: 1972 JD500 question
If you do infact have a 72 model than there is not a Voltage Regulator. And a 72 has a rectangular headlight.
As the 72 stator had a rather low output coil there is not a need for a regulator but it would not hurt the system if there was one added.
But you may have a 72 that has had the grill assy replaced with a 73 and up one which has the round sealedbeam light.
As JDJR stated the round lamp is an easy find at any auto parts store. 5034 is the part number I believe.
And a halogen unit works best and only costs about $2 more.
Now if you do have a 73 and up model the VR is located behind the dash mounted on the tube that supports the dash.
The VR is a generic unit and any brand/color one will work with a single or two wire hookup.

Re: 1972 JD500 question
Well, my S/N starts with 5000B, which I have found out coincides with the 1973 model...so I must have a bad voltage regulator, cause I keep blowing lamps when the RPMs increase..I thought it was because the lamps I was buying were much lower than the 60 watts....darn, must now take engine cover off and look for VR. BTW, the tail light was not effected.

The headlight is generally the first to go, with the other bulbs not affected. Get a new V-reg, and make sure it has a good clean ground to the chassis when you install it.

Re: 1972 JD500 question
I took apart my 1973 JD 500 looking for this Voltage Regulator because of my headlight burning out.
Re: 1972 JD500 question
And found this bolted to the frame...engine has been replaced, S/N on chassis is different from S/N on 440 engine...S/N on engine in 13,000 range.

Re: 1972 JD500 question
I don't know what that is, home made regulator?....but the serial numbers on the engine don't normally match the frame. What's the model number on the engine tag? Should be a KEC-440.Tim500 wrote:And found this bolted to the frame...engine has been replaced, S/N on chassis is different from S/N on 440 engine...S/N on engine in 13,000 range.

Re: 1972 JD500 question
Looks like it could be a curcuit breaker in the metal can with the two wires.
And a one ohm wirewound high wattage resistor.
If it is suppose to be a voltage regulator it would be a very crude one and only actually work at a specific RPM.
Let us know what engine you have and plan on some rewiring and installing the correct regulator like the one you have in the previous picture.

Todd,
Do you think this might require a whole new wiring harness?

Depends... Was the previous owner a butcher?
If it is all heacked up and spliced and jury rigged than a new harness would be a good idea.
But if the the only issue is the VR as you pictured than you should be able to fix that easy enough.
Whats the poop on that transplanted engine?

will know about what engine is in it this weekend, and will let you know.
Re: 1972 JD500 question
It is in fact the KEC 440
