decal removal

Post by 400brian »

Need some advice:

I need to clean up a '72 hood of the decals and stripe. The registration stickers and numbers peeled off fine, but the Deere applied decals are tenacious. I'm using heat, but I can't get them top peel, I get little slivers, and it appears I'm doing an unacceptable amount of damage to the paint underneath.

Any good ideas?

I've used eraser wheels with pretty good luck. Never been to concerned with the paint though since I planned on repainting anyways. It definitely works really good though and it won't gouge the paint up, but it may dull it a bit.

Sean "Mottsi" used the eraser wheel on his hood with good results but I'm never used one.

Chris uses the eraser all the time & when he's done it seems to be a good job & the paint isn't hurt unless you burn it, & it seems that you'd really have to be pushing to do that.

Tried the DW OFF, does work to a degree. Softens the adhesive agent under the decal, but it also softens the paint.
Got about half the leaping deer off one side, but the remainder stubbornly remains.
I'm going to get one of the eraser wheels and try that.

The user of the drill in the video is having a problem keeping the wheel in contact with the surface.
Bent arbor? Wheel not centered in the arbor?

I have used an eraser wheel for years and they work great.
Even on those pesky vintage MN License decals which used some kind of adhesive that stuck so well it was outlawed years ago.

Look for the wheels that look like a gum eraser in color and are very soft.
They work best.

Also a side to side motion is the trick, not allowing the wheel to contact full decal.
Keeping the wheel flat on the surface will make it last longer too.

So the eraser wheel arrived ( bought a 3M wheel off Amazon ), so I eagerly approached the hood to try it out.
The result was...nada, zip, nothing! It did not touch that 40 year old decal. :wall:

Out of desperation, I tried scraping it off with my jack knife again, and to my surprise I started peeling it off in narrow strips. This is the decal I had sprayed the OFF on, and it must have affected it, because a decal that had not gotten the OFF treatment wouldn't do this. The adhesive remained, but the reflective layer peeled off.

So now I try the wheel on the adhesive, but saw limited success. So I sprayed the area with OFF and tried the wheel again, and it worked much better. However, don't do this on paint you don't want to mess up.

wow, that is some kind of stubborn. Sound like the bulkhead out of Adams cyclone soda, chemical stripper nothing. That paint would not come off, every once in a while you find things like that.

Put new hood decals on my 76 Liquifire a couple of years back.
I unwittingly put the hood on a table outside in the sun on a 85-90 degree day in the summer came back
a couple of hours later and the decals came off in one piece.
Used a tiny bit of automotive paint thinner to remove any residue that remained.

After you heat and get the decal off and you have the stick-um left on 3m makes a remover that works great. I am at work now so I cant give you the exact number. But it is used to take the woodgrain decals off them darn mini vans. I have used this stuff for years, spray it on let it sit a few minutes then I use a plastic bondo spreader to scrap off the stick-um...
