Mikuni conversion

Post by Bardtj »

Can someone please elaborate on the process of putting a mikuni carb on a Koehler 295 out of a John Deere 300?

Are you using the engine in the JD 300?

You will than need a carb WM-28 0r VM-30.
A fuel pump.
A throttle cable.
A choke cable.
Some new fuel lines.
Would also replace the filter is you have not already done that.
And the pickup/filter inside teeh tank.

I have not done the small Mikuni converstion but my guess would be that you do not need a different grip/throttle lever as you need with the larger Mic Carbs.

Someone on here probably has done this and could advise to jetting but if you jet it for 300 cc you would be very close.

What fuel pump would I need? And what length choke and throttle? Which leads me to another question, my choke on the dash won't seem to open or close???

The cable chokes on the dash tend to sieze with non-use.
If you are doing a Mic convrsion that cable will not work anyway.

You can soak the cable in penatration oil of a few days and you may get it freed up.

Do not pull hard on the cable knob while it is mounted in the dash or you will break the plastic.

A single output fuel pump will work just fine. Cable lenght is not long.
Grab a tape measure. A few inches longer is ok but if you come up short......

Looks like you can buy all the needed parts right here at New Breed Parts.

Go to the Portal link. And then engine, then fuel system.

I did this switch a few years ago and used and Cyclone grip and carb VM-34. We did get it going good with the larger carb but a smaller one like Todd suggested might be best. You need a different grip to get a mik to wide open, the stock grips did not have enough travel.

I have done the larger Mic on a 440 and yes, the grip change is required.

But is it on a 28-30?
I mean it does not travel as far right ,so maybe the stock grip would be fine.

Not sure....

Todd you have a good point there. I have never dealt with the smaller carbs they might work With the stock grips

Would that list of parts for the JD300 be the same to convert a "73" JDX4 with a Koehler 295AX?
