Brake Band on JD300
So I think a brake job is in order, just wondering how much effort this will be for someone with limited mechanical experience, not scared to get my hands dirty, I just usually have a mentor who is unavailable right now.
1975 JD300
AM52626 should be the part # right?

Re: Brake Band on JD300
Just curious if adjusting the 2 nuts where the brake cable connects to the brake arm would help any till I can make this repair.
The reason I ask is one is hard to get at and the other is a wee bit rusted so will I gain anything...for my frustration.

Re: Brake Band on JD300
Those two jam nuts are the brake adjusters, so yes, as long as you have pad left on the band, you can tighten it. The toughest part of changing the band is removing the secondary shaft from the chain case, which you need to do to pull the brake drum out and put back in with the band wrapped around it. Some times the drum is fairly stuck on the shaft and requires some persuasion with a mallet after removing the secondary clutch and the top sprocket in the chaincase.

Brian:
You have totally lost me...Second set of holes?
Matt:
Now you have me worried...I wish there was a local shop that did this sort of thing....Had enough "puller" issues when we tore the old girl down to do a head gasket job....And I missed most of the cursing with that job.

After the adjustment is used up by the nuts on the cable, you can relocated the anchor pin on the band into the next set of holes so you can start over with the adjuster nuts on the cable. Refer to your owners manual or the service manual.

Re: Brake Band on JD300
I've been thinking...
Last winter, while doing the final install of the brake on my '72 400, I realized that the lining on the NOS band brake was coming off. If I remember correctly, I successfully rolled it out from around the brake drum, and put another in. There was no way I was going to pull the secondary shaft out at that point.
