Hello,
I recently purchased a 1977 (Built 5/76) John Deere 300 model. It has the Kohler 295 twin in it. Overall it's in decent shape.
The exhaust pipe the exits the bellypan broke off the muffler. I did try to weld it back on but it is ugly and I would like to find another exhaust system. Anyone know where I could find one?
Also I'm curious about the crank seals. How hard are they to replace? I've rebuilt top ends of snowmobiles before but I have never done crank seals. What steps are involved?
Thanks

In my opinion you really should reseal the case halves if you replace the seals. If I remember right on the kohler 6 of the crankcase bolts are through bolts that hold the cylinders on as well so you really should disassemble the entire engine to do the seals. Its really not to bad of a job, you will need clutch and flywheel pullers but other then that just normal tools.

No need to split the case on your engine as the 300 Kohler has the seals mounted external of the case on plates.
Very easy to change even with the engine still mounted. The only engine I would say this about.
You will need the proper pullers as stated.

What's the best way to get the flywheel nut off? Is a impact gun acceptable?
