1976 Kohler K2952AX Rebuild

I would like to rebuild my 1976 Kohler K2952AX engine this engine is original and never had a thing done to it.

It runs well and has no problems that I can detect but after 36 years think it is probable time to rebuild it. lol

My question is how hard is it to rebuild and what parts will I need.

My bigger concern is once I blow this engine apart are there any parts I will need to replace that I will have a hard time finding or will not be able to find?


I have never rebuilt a snowmobile motor totally before but am a very handy guy and do all my own automobile repairs myself on my cars.

If your worried about it I would just buy a gasket set (with seals), pull it apart, deglaze/ lightly hone cylinders and reassemble it. You could prob find a set of rings pretty easily if there's alot of blowby past them but its up to you. Need clutch and flywheel pullers, thats about it for special tools.

Fairly easy, but make sure you keep your bolts separated, you will also need to reset the points once you pull the flywheel and stator and make sure you have rings or piston and rings first.

You can pull the primary with a 14mm bolt and some Teflon tape and oil... I find that works better then the actual puller on those.

Perfect boys thanks a million since you all sound like experts I'm going for it and will more than likely be asking for more help down the road with this.

I have found standard piston rings for this engine already from a guy selling them on this site.

But now want to make sure those will work as as Foxtrac68 mentioned lightly hone the cylinders will the standard AM52529 rings still fit then?

As well any opinions on clutch and flywheel pullers which ones are good and who has a good deal on them?

And SpitfireKing can you please explain pulling the primary with a 14mm bolt and some Teflon tape and oil?
