1975 600
I have a couple of questions about my John Deere 600, good original condition. It has a Bendix carb. When I bought it, it would run but wouldn't idle, only wanted to start with ether. The Primer fuel line was not connected, it had been broken. I totally cleaned carb, bought new gaskets and all new fuel lines including a new primer line. Changed plugs, drained old fuel, put new in, gave it three shots with the primer, and it fired right up and ran good, idled for 30-40 minutes. Let it set for 3 hours, came back and wanted to see it fire up again, and now it doesn't want to idle. It onlt wants to run on the primer shots. Although I have the clear fuel lines on and can see the gas bubbling to the carb. It puzzles me when it just idled so good a few hours before. Any help appreciated.
Also I have a question about a leaky exaust flange, right where the exhaust comes out of the engine, where the muffler goes on with that clamp, it is leaking some, if there supposed to be a seal/gasket there?

New crank seals would be the first thing I would do.
There is a donut fitting on the exhaust. Like a ball and socket.
This could be rusted out. Take it apart and see if any metal is missing.
New fitting is like $15.

Are you talking about the flange with the two springs? My leak is not coming from there, it is where that short 90 degree elbow slides and then clamps around the short pipe coming right off of the motor?
Would bad crank seals cause that trouble? Idle and then not idle?

Where is the best place to buy new seals? Is there right and left?

Bad crank seals can be your worst nightmare.
If there is any doubt as to the condition of them it is $10 well spent to replace them.
Some possible reasons for leaking could be, again, rusted connections, too rich mixture, excess fuel in crankcase. plugged exhaust(muffler).
Common seal size and the same L/R, Any auto parts store should have them or get them possibly overnight.

On a 75 600, do you have to dissasemble the engine to do the seals? Or can you just pull the clutch off and get to them?

Your idle issues could have numerous causes
crank seals, too rich, plugged exhaust, ect., ect.
Yes seals can be replaced on that motor in the sled. But If it was me I would pull the motor and tear it down to inspect everything.

Check you plugs, and see if you fouled them when letting it idle the first time. You really don't need to let it idle for more then a couple minutes, things will foul up.

im from crawforsville IN , itwould be just as fast if not faster to pull the motor off the sled and set it on the bench , flip it upside down and remove the bottom half of the crankcase , you dont have to worry about knicking the crankshaft trying to wheezle the seal in or out or damaging the new seal going in . at the same time you will reseal the crankcase which also could be leaking , it sounds like a pain but its really not that bad of a job . in the process you can better inspect connections etc that may be causing fits wade

Ok. New plugs-primed once, starts first pull, idles 5-10 seconds then dies. Then I notice liquid dripping out bottom of exhaust under belly pan...? 3 primes, starts second pull, idles 15 seconds, dies, liquid dripping out of exhaust...? Is the carb totally out of adjustment causing way to much fuel to come in?? Or is it a motor problem?

Your low speed needle adjustment could be running it rich, or, you could have a weak ignition. Does it rev up smoothly when you press the throttle or does it bog?
