Which is the right engine?

Well I pulled both of the carbs off of both of the 600s tonight and I noticed that one had a thick gasket on the intake side and the other didn't. I started cleaning some things and low and behold, one has a 340/5 and one has a 440/5 engine in them.

Ok, looking up on the history link, it shows that the 600 (74) should have had a 440 in it.

Is this right? Both carbs are Bendix/Zenith with the same numbers on them. What made me notice the difference was that one had the thick intake gasket.

This is getting interesting.... Both are free air, they look just like each other, and are the same size, bolt on the same, there is almost nothing I can spot with the eye to tell them apart........

I'm almost glad I'm stripping them down, now I can at least get it back to oringinal.

The 340 doesnt belong....both are fan cooled not free air I beleive both motors are the same aside from a different top end meaning the 340 can be made into a 440. It is also possible the engine is still a 440 and a 340 fan hosing was swapped onto it at sometime the only way to tell for sure is by what numbers are on the cylinders.

30 years ago, Pa bought me a '64 Chevy wagon, to donate its 283 V8 for my 55 Chev.
When I tore it down to overhaul it, the bore wasn't right. A little investigation revealed it to be a '64 327 ! One of the few times I can remember a good suprise
