kohler heads one forward one backward ???

I bought this jd 300 last night and when I removed the cooling shield I found that one of the heads was placed in a different orientation from the other one. One with there casting cut off to the front and one to the back? would this have cause damage or what am I missing. Is this normal? Which way are they supposed to face with casting cut of to the rear of the seld or the nose of the seld? Why whould one have done this? fyi this is a kohler 295-2ax 1974or 1975

well i got the motor running after i switch to the right way (I thing) After good cleaning of the carb and checking a few other things, I went for a short spin and every thing worked good enough for some thing that has been sitting for ten years, most of all the light worked even the dash merry xmas to me. Its been so long since i drove one of these oldes i for got that they don't steer on ice packed roads< I had one guy looking so hard he almost hit the ditch. I can't wait to get the rest of this thing looked over... Thanks to all in the past that have repyled if any one know why some one would pu t a head facing one way and the other a different way i really would love to know your thoughts.
