Spitfire wants to go fast
Guys, need some help here...trying to diagnos problem from 200 miles away. My sons are at the cabin with cousins doing a little sledding. Got a 79 spitfire (kohler) converted to mikuni slide carb that goes like hell when you start it. Throttle cable not stuck and slide is moving freely up and down. Idle/air adjustment screws on carb seem to have no affect. Spitty only knows one speed - wide open. Would a stuck choke plunger cause it to immediately redline? A stuck float? Crank seals were replaced last season and it ran great.

My first thought is that it is getting air from somewhere.

Nope. They tell me the needle doesn't move in the slide. My best guess is a stuck float at this point.

Re: Spitfire wants to go fast
Is this something that had been running and now all the sudden acting up or is this the start up after the conversion?
Is it possible to get the floats installed up side down?

Did the barrel pop out of the slot in the thumb throttle?

Re: Spitfire wants to go fast
Barrel didn't pop. Throttle working as designed. Carb conversion was at beginning of last season. Ran great every time out. I just didn't have a chance to go through it as they just pulled it off the trailer for the first ride of the year. I'm going to jump in truck tomorrow morning and try to figure it out for the kid. I'll let you know what I discover. Thanks for the ideas guys.

Re: Spitfire wants to go fast
im with brian on this one its getting unmetered air from someplace, a stuck float will just cause a gassy mess in the belly pan as the fuel will run out of the carb bowl vent tubes , what about the intake tube being cracked or loose, fuel pump pulse line sucking air, maybe the fuel pump diaphram doing something dumb ? just ideas wade

Re: Spitfire wants to go fast
Could be the locking nut on the throttle cable came loose. I had a similar experiance with a Spitfire I just bought not to long ago.

Re: Spitfire wants to go fast
Wow...This was a good one guys. Over the summer I switched out the original throttle block because the toggle kill switch is easier for the kids to operate. Blocks must not be the same thickness as the throttle cable is too short now. Slide moves up and down freely, but bottoms out at half throttle, thus the go like hell on start-up. Appears one needs to include a trailfire cable to make the conversion work properly. Kids also shelled a recoil on the other spitfire today. If anyone knows where I can buy a rebuild kit I'd appreciate it.

Re: Spitfire wants to go fast
I bought my kit from car quest. The one here carries lots of aftermarket parts for sleds. The only info on the package is:
Fowler Distributors -Starter pawl kit F11-311.
Not an exact match but it works.
Hope this helps.
