Working on a 74 jdx6 UPDATE 1/5 with video

Post by silverlakez400 »

Okay, I had spark on one cyl last night. Today I don't have spark on either side. I attempted to clean the points. I did this by seperating the points with a screw driver and hitting them with some 220 grit. I'm sure I screwed something up. I can not get any spark, but I know I had at least one cyl last night!!

Okay, what are the things I should try from here? any input will be followed!

Probably still micro bits of sand between the points not letting them make contact. I take the cover off of a book of matches, tear it in little strips, insert one between the points, let the points close and pull it out. This should clean out the sand and any oils that might be on the points. You can do this more then once.
I'm sure you know to check the switches. You can disconnect the main harness from the motor incase a switch is bad, this will eliminate all the wiring.

Thank you Jimmy. I hit the points again with more sand paper, and really took my time. I still didn't see anything, but was starting to wonder if I was getting good contact doing it by myself. So I recruited a friend who is an electrician to help. He tested it while I pulled. I have around 19 Volts on the left side, and in the 20's on the right side. does this sound right? Then we hooked the plugs up and with him holding it grounded, I'm getting good spark on both sides. So I am really excited for the carb to be ready

Okay, here it is. I went out last night knowing I had spark for sure, and that all I had to do was add fuel. I rebuilt the carb as well when I went out there. I used a straw to put a little bit of fuel in each cyl and pulled it over. Nothing. I tried either. Nothing. I tried sanding down the plugs and wires. Nothing. I tried crying out to God, nothing!!

Today I went out there with my wife because my family was in town and playing with our daughter. using my wife to pull it over, I couldn't see spark. I swapped out the left side plug with something that was much smaller, but still screwed in, and hooked up my test light. I pulled good and hard and the thing sprang to life!!!! scared the crap out of me. I revved it a few times and it responded. I forgot that I wasn't ready for it to be reved and spun my support that was under the track off. But it ran!!! So I gave my wife my phone and had her record the next pull. It fired up again, but seemed to be running lean towards again, so I tried it again, and it was for sure running lean so I shut it off. I am going to buy new plugs (it was running on one 30yr old plug and one old plug from my old moped) and a few fuel filter (again it has a 30yr old one) tomorrow and see if that helps it get more fuel. Otherwise, I'm taking it to a shop and having them do a leak down test for the crank case seals.

Save your money on the leakdown test and just replace the seals. Much better return on the investment.

I'm thinking I'm not going to get a test or do the seals yet. I've read enough on here on what the symptoms are. So I'll do some riding around my yard until the signs show up or dont.

But I think I screwed something up in the carb when I rebuilt it. So that will be coming back apart tonight. I am getting lots of suction from the air box. and I have to play with the choke to get it to pull fuel from my jug. I'm trying to post a video to youtube of what it is doing. I'll post a link if I can get it to .

I think that should be it.

It looks like an awful amount of air going through the fuel lines. Maybe there is a pinhole or bad connection on one?

Then I'm putting on the new fuel lines before I mess with the carb jets to much. I checked the lines, but they still could have a small leak I didn't notice.

Also, I am running about 40:1 mixture on this.

Often times old seals will fail under load and your symptom will be a hole in a piston. Do as you wish, but seals are cheap assurance and take about an hour to replace in that sled.

Well, a guy who works on old sleds near me told me to try a bunch of other things. The shape of my fuel lines lead him to believe the seals might still be good. I'm leaning towards just changing them though. But I just found out I'm getting a new (better paying) job, so I'm going to be stupid busy for a while. It might just have to sit for a while longer.

I'm kind of torn. This guy is known around here for work with old sleds, and he has some good points, like the fact I have really good air pull at the air box going into the carb. I just put my old diaphram back into the carb instead of the 2 piece one from winderosa. He and some others on here have seen issues with them. Plus my old diaphram is the only piece that looks really good still.

But you guys live these old sleds and know what a PITA the crank seals can be for old sleds. So I don't want to ignore your advice as well. Tonight I'll eliminate almost all but the crank seals, so I'll know soon enough.

I can't imagine the rational behind comparing the fuel line condition to the crankseals condition. :silenced: :wall:

Thats my kind of motivation! lol. Seriously, call me sometime and i will walk you through the whole process. You will just need a few special tools that you can get at your local NAPA if you don't already have. Its not too hard to do.

I ran into an old friend Thursday, and we got to talking at the gas pumps. He just refurbished a 72 artic cat this summer/fall. He is MUCH better than me at these things, and has been riding sleds his whole life. So he actually has a leak down test kit, and he came over and we worked on the sled today. It has great compression!! And the last time I had it running, it was pouring gas out the exhaust. I didn't touch a thing, and the problem fixed its self.

Randy brought an in tank screen with a check valve in it (mine didn't have a screen or check valve on it when I pulled it apart) and worked on tuning the carb for me. I learned a lot and actually went for a very short ride. We have almost no snow. The plan for now is to run it a little if we ever get snow, about 50 miles a weekend at most. And then next winter start doing more of what I wanted to this year but don't have money for. I got some air under the front end, and I'll try to get it up on youtube.
