1978 Liquifire Cross Shafts

Post by boaski »

I'm trying to get done with a 78 Liquifire that I've been working on at my usual glacial pace. The rear suspension had no movement so I dropped it out. I had hoped that it would be something simple, but both cross shafts are frozen tight. Before I do something stupid I need to see if anyone has found a good way to get aluminum shafts out of steel tubes...

Thanks

While I don't disagree, there's more than "one way to skin a cat" and somewhere on this website are the other ways. I just don't know where so you'll have to search. Just plan on having new shafts made, that will at least make you quit worrying about saving them.

i like the acid deal because it seems like no matter what if i try and get the aluminum shaft out i end up damaging the suspension arm and then i am in need of both parts !! i think i may have an extra set of shafts if you need them thanks wade

Thanks for the input! I had thought about using heat, but was afraid of the results listed in the last post. I'm going to try the muratic acid method & see what happens. I had already figured I's have to make new shafts. I may even have some shafts laying here from a previous sled repair.

Thanks again for the responses.

I've gotten several of them out before without destroying them, with heat, a bolt threaded into the end of the shaft to hit, and a hammer.

Matt is right , I think we are the doomsday Crüe that have had ones that won't budge at all , but like Matt says some of them will come out with a little love and finesse
