Ignition results..

Post by Viktory2k1 »

Hi
Checked all I could with the link from Harleysportser. Results:
Low speed coil: 1.07 K ohms
High speed coil 70.7 ohms
Trigger coils:
PTO 29 ohms
mag 28.8 ohms
Coil test:
PTO 250ohms +/-
Mag 240 ohms +/-
Plug boot to ground went nuts on both coils.
Primary wire to ground went nuts
also lighting coil test said open but all lights work exc tach and speedo(bad bulbs)
My hanress was different then what was described on Hewtech diagram.
The colors were correct on cdi side but slightly different on enging side. I will do my best to explain this.
B style plug to cdi left to right and down:
blue black red
yellow green white
Motor side is:
blue white(which goes to ign switch plug) red
yellow green white.
There are 2 other wires coming out of motor. They are both green with yellow tracer. One is hardwired to brown which goes to voltage regulator terminal and other one is grounded to engine
The pics of the cdi link showed a huge ground strap , a white connenctor, and I think a starter ground. Mine has none of these. I need my camera!

Vic,
If the low speed winding test is correct, the results are too low for a good spark. The high speed winding is fine. The trigger coils are fine and external coil results are in the normal range. This leads to a bad stator.
Here is a picture of the wiring diagram for the '76 rectangle style
Image
1977/78 style
Image, try and confirm all the wires. The 2 green with yellow tracer wires are the lighting coil wires. Place the red test lead on one and the black test lead on the other.

Is your CDI box the original prestolite type with the aluminum housing or an aftermarket such as Sno-Stuff or Kimpex? The aftermarket CDI boxes may have a different color code on the wires?

Cant get a pic due to heavy rain.
Now I have to find a stator I guess.
I will also double check the low speed coil.
Gotta wait for the rain to stop though.

I double checked the low speed coil and it was 1.606K ohms. High speed coil 72 ohms.
Low speed coil is supposed to be 2.7k.
