Fuel tank grommet installation

I am trying to replace the fuel tank grommet along with all new lines and in tank filter, but cannot seem to get it in there. Just wondering if anyone had any tricks to getting those guys on there.

I am not familiar with the Spitfire but if it is the typical gromment type, just wet it and carefully twist it in place.

I always put the grommet in the hole in the tank first and then push the metal fitting through the centre. If you put the fitting in the grommet first it seems a lot harder.

Yes, this is how it is meant to go in. When you push the fitting into the grommet it flares the back of the grommet in the tank which is what holds it in and seals it.

Yep, that's how you do it.

I think the grommet is still available through JD parts, p/n M66005 "bushing".

with my TF tank, i first placed the grommet in a cup of hot water for a min or 2. made it very pliable and much easier to install

Thanks for all the replies guys, it made a huge difference putting the grommet in first and then the fitting. Wish I had thought of that... Now if only it wasn't so cold and windy I could ride this thing! Wind chills from 20 to 45 below expected today

I do it like this but lube the fitting with 2 cycle oil. It slides right in when well lubed.

Yeah, these guys are right, you need to put the grommet in first but I went one step further and put the metal fitting in the freezer for about the amount of time it took to make two beers disappear. Could be my imagination but it seemed to make it go in a litle easier.
