1983 John Deere 440 Liquifire. I've been told only 1300 were built for 83 and 84 was the last year with only 420 built. The motor has been rebuilt with new crank bearings, crank seals and pistons less than 30 minutes on motor. The heads were modified to Aaen trail specs It has the TR800 clutch and the newer style CDI box. Sled at one time had twin pipes, but now has the stock pipe. The belly pan has been cut for the twin pipes. The Kawasaki 440 has a set of Powerjet Mukuni carbs with K&N filters. A new seat cover has been installed along with some other odds ends. The cowl has some damage but overall is in great shape. The track will need to be replaced due to missing clips and rips. I working on getting a used track. I also have "His" and "Her" John Deere Snowmobile suits.

I had intentions of Vintage racing and showing though, I've lost intersted in this project.

Asking 750 obo or will consider trades.

Hey guys,

I am not far away from this sled and may consider it but do not know much about the later liquifires or much about the later sleds in general as far as what to look for. I was wondering about the newer style CDI and how much would a track for one of these cost. also was wondering whether liquifires are somewhat reliable as modded sleds or can they be timebombs? I know it depends on whose does the work but were the liquifires what i would call "maxed" out from the factory or was there room to play with the motors. Also, anything else to look for when looking at these sleds. I plan on buying a newer Deere anyway once I accept my first engineering job so I should probably learn as much as I can about them. Thanks

The cdi reference concerns the system that arrived on 1982 models. There is a huge thread in the Kawasaki Tech section on this site that offers some background on the differences of the two systems. As for the track, the OEM Deere Yokohama track is generally a good unit with decent used examples around for the taking. The engine is essentially de - tuned from what Kawasaki put in their machines of the same vintage.
Kawasaki saved the best tricks for themselves and Deere put the emphasis on longevity, so the pieces fit together well between the companies in that department. Bear in mind that much can be done with clutching and even gearing before you ever get into engine mods. Ask the right questions and someone in the community will be able to help.

Looks to me like it has Invader heads.

I'd look closely at the clutches. There were a lot of second generation LF's manufactured with the 102c / 1 1/4" belt setup. The 83's had the TR800 with the 1 3/8" belt (which it has by the craigslist picture). There were less of these produced and repair parts are a little harder to find for the TR800 than the 102C.
