Primary/Secondary Clutch Spacing and New Belt?

Post by 78CYCLONEPJ »

My question is about the spacing between the two clutches. I understand there is a clutch tool for this, but I can imagine finding one of those would be like finding a NOS Indak kill switch. So really I should be able to measure from the secondary back to primary with relative accuracy if I knew the distance. Perhaps I could fabricate a tool/jig if I had that info. I know how to measure for offset but I need to set clutch distance first. Also what replacement drive belt should I be using, currently I have a Carlise Max2 1078M2. Not sure if this belt is a good match for the OEM belt I believe this belt is narrower by about 2-3 mm and possibly longer (maybe clutch spacing IS fine). The belt sits barely flush with top of secondary sheeves and the wear marks on the primary show about 3/4" where the belt has not climbed to the top . Any info would be greatly appeciated.
Thanks in advance
Pete

i'm guessing this is a 78 cyclone by your handle...if so the fine tune manual say's 11.47 inches center bolt of primary to centerbolt of secondary...dave

I have run two different sizes, a 1078 and a 1080. The 1078 series is just slightly longer than the original belt size and the I think the 1080 series is slightly smaller than the original.
Both belts are considerd to have a width of 1-1/4 inch. Keep in mind, all belt sizes are "nominal sizes" which means they are not manufactured exactly the same each time. There could be a difference of 1/4 inch in length between belts that are labeled the same, new.
OEM belt= 46.30 + or - .25 in
1078 belt = 46 5/8 in
1080 belt =46-3/16in
The exact measurement between the primary clutch bolt center and the secondary bolt center is 11.47 in. (just slightly under 11-1/2 inch)

Interesting thread...The center to center distance of 11.47 seems non adjustable on my 78 Cylcone. The engine plate appears to have round holes (not elongated). How do you adjust?

The stock aluminum plate should have slotted holes. If they were filled in or patched, file them back out. Do you have the engine out of the chassis?

Thanks to all that responded. The measurement between clutch inner sheeves was a great idea, assuming you are 11.47" c/c then that measurement between clutches will be much easier to gage. BTW my mounting plate has elongated holes.

After adjusting my cluthes to proper spacing and installing my Carlise 1078 (4615/32), I started the sled. I found that when on the stand and running there is some drag on the belt causing the track to rotate slightly. I went online and the Dayco HP3012 is slightly longer @ 46.688x1.25, going to buy one and give it a try.

You could also shim the secondary, depending on how much the drag is. There are procedures for this in the service manual. As the belt wears you remove shims to maintain proper tolerance.

I pulled engine today (78 Cyclone) with the plate and am going to pull the engine off the plate. I assume elongated holes are there where engine meets plate. I also ran the HP3012 and it is not riding up all the way on my primary. So I will move plate if it allows so belt can reach outer diameter of primary. I shimmed both clutches to 1 1/4" belt width spec.

Pulled engine bolt out and saw elongated hole. Pita to get to when mounted in sled. Any good ideas getting to those bolts?

to get the bolts on the clutch side, remove the secondary to gain eccess under the engine plate. There are holes in the pan for the bolts on the mag side.

You can get in there from the right under steering shaft but prepare to be injured. the hole is so small on left but good for a wrench

When i adjusted my engine on the plate I removed the plate mounting hardware, dropped the bolts out of the front end. Put a short piece of 2x4 on end between plate and frame (under manifold). Now motor bolts can be loosened easily. I loosened bolts, moved motor, dropped motor back down, temp installed front mount bolts (plate to frame), check alignment, if good snug up one bolt (r/s frt) lift motor back up, tighen bolts, remove 2x4 again and reinstall plate mounting hardware. Seems like a lot, but it saves the skin on your knuckles!

As far as belts go, I bought a Dayco HP3012 seems it fit better, no drag and it sits higher in the secondary.
