Re: A sled to go with the engine
Trying to get this thing finished up. Bar is on, and NOS flap. The original seat ( recovered by John ) is just sitting there for looks at this point. Got the '72 hood back from the painter on Sunday. Deja Vu all over again on the hood, as the first one I did last winter, wound up on the wife's sled, as the 72 and 74 latching systems don't interchange.

If the Deere guys do a display at the Baraboo Steam and Gas show next summer, ( and as I recall we were invited ), then yes, that is a possibility.liquitisplit80 wrote:Looks fantastic Brian!! Are you going to bring it to the Badger show this year?

Re: A sled to go with the engine
The sled is pretty much done , just a few little things left.
Fixing up this sled was the reason I joined this group back in the early 2000's. Little did I know where it would lead!
As promised, I'm going to go through and give some credit to all that assisted in the project, because without all the help I received, it would not have turned out like it did. Remember, all parts mentioned are NOS, and I spent 10 years collecting these parts, and I'm going from memory here.
Greg Stebner was the source of many parts. The speedo and very rare tach, the handle bar, the snow flap, the rubber bumpers that are at the corners of the windshield, and a few bogies, come quickly to mind.
Ed Poet was the source of many small parts, the tie rods, drive sprockets and chain, and headlight, were some of the last ones.
Don Amber found me a few bogies.
Kevin Campbell got a pair of skis from Don. I later negotiated a deal between JDJR and Kevin, that resulted in Joe buying KWC's 72 400, and I got the skis. The bogies from Stebner came through Kevin by mistake.
Greg Stephen; list member out in Denver. I got the ski shock kit from him.
Russ Teletzke; Lives near Horicon Joe Wanie. Bought a 340/S engine from him, he threw in the apparently new front bumper in the deal.
Cannon Classic Sleds; I sent Jeff an NOS '72 windshield quite a few years ago, and he used it to reproduce the '72 windshield on the sled. The trim on the original has turned gold, which just isn't right.
John's Upholstery did a nice job of recovering the original foam. The original seat was still intact, but the staples had all rusted off.
DK Trader; many items came through them off ebay. Rear idlers, pistons
e-bay: The largest score off ebay was the e-start kit. The '72 kit is unique, and it was the only one I've seen for sale. Stebner thought he had some, but could never find me one. Many other items: the clutch, half the secondary, spindles, kill switch, control cables, brake switch, brake band, windshield, track drivers, and drive shaft, to name a few. Much of the time I didn't have a lot of competition for '72 parts.
Joe Rainville: many items. fixed half of clutch, track adjuster hardware, leaf springs, rear suspension parts, and a track, among others.
List member; JDChad sent me a bogie wheel that he felt I needed. Thanks
Kenny Heins located a jug at a JD dealership in Michigan for me, that helped.
Jerome Kretzman rebuilt the crankshaft.
Al Pobjoy did the painting. We used genuine Deere paint with hardener.
Decals: Engineered Graphics supplied the gas door lettering. AFE Graphics the hood decals and stripes. List member TOYMECHANIC is working the tunnel decal.
Thanks to all here on the list who offered advise or moral support, Troy and Kevin for sure. If I forgot someone, my apologies.
Some of the original hardware was re-used. At the Whitetail, the guys were asking about the carriage bolts that hold the bogie shafts on, the heads are on the foot boards. These are original Deere logo hardware. They were bead blasted and painted Rustoleum stainless steel. The JD logo on the heads all face out. There are no Nyloc locknuts on the sled. Deere used pinch nuts, and I bought and used a lot of them from a specialty fastener place.
The track adjuster bolts are stainless steel, as is the hardware that retains the headlight.
