How do I quiet down my sled?

Post by silverlakez400 »

I have a 74 x6, and it's really loud!! I wear ear muffs while riding it, but I would love to take my daughter on it for a ride. Can I buy a different muffler without losing power? or should I try to put insulation on the inside of the hood?

It may be that the baffles are rusted out on yours.

Try a new muffler (stock) and I bet you will be happy.

These are not loud machines.

You will most likely need to find a good used one, unless someone happens to have a NOS one laying around.

This post reminds me of a funny story about a JD300…..it was one of our first sleds down here in Flatlanderville. One of our first sleds (15 year ago) was this JD300 with a “custom” exhaust. Well it snowed and we were out terrorizing the town when a pick-up pulled up and said, “the cops are looking for you guys”. (You understand there are not many or any sleds in sleepy little Flatlanderville). I remember asking as we were on the outskirts of town, “how did you find us?”. I knew the machine was loud but it was obvious when the response was “I rolled my window down………”

Put a note in the classifieds section here and someone may have a NOS one or a good used one.

JDT, 5 years ago, I would have been that guy on the loud sled. But now I'm realizing how much I want my ears to work when I'm older, so i'm looking to change things up. That and I own a house and I'm stuck with the neighbors, so I wan them in a good mood.

How much for the pipe? I don't know if I can afford it, but I don't want to ride the sled unless its quite enough. I'll try putting all the plastics on and see what that does.

Do you have an airbox on it? The carb contributes a fair amount of noise, especially from the drivers position.

I do have an airbox on it. I blew my track up, so I'm putting muffler search kind of on hold. I had my brother over Sunday and I fired the sled up. he thinks it too loud, and he wont wear ear plugs at a NASCAR race, so that said something to me.

The muffler you need is AM53092, the same as a '74 JDX8.
I have a bit of experience with that. A couple of years ago while running the Vintage Challenge, my X8 got really loud.
I had blown out the pipe, however, when I removed the muffler ( and its more work than it looks like ) I found that the lower half was rusted out, probably due to rodent pee.

These mufflers are very hard to find. A buddy helped me out with an NOS one. They don't show up on ebay very often, new or used. Good luck.

Maybe MR Deere will set you up with his old one if he goes for the upgrade he was talking about.
