1983 Trailfire Fuel Pump Issue

Post by deereoftheyear »

Went for a good ride today but unfortunately ended about 60 miles from home with a dead snowmobile. I was riding the sled when it suddenly coughed, bogged and died. Id wait ten seconds, give it a pull and it start up and Id be able to ride a few hundred yards, then same thing, cough, bog, die. Spark was good, engine has been resealed, clean carb, and regularly ridden. On the side of the road I pulled the fuel line off to the carb, started the engine and found that no gas was coming out of the fuel line....when the engine died after a bit, a large squirt of gas would come out the line. I figure that was why I was able to restart it and ride it a short distance every time it died. I pulled the vacuum line off the fuel pump, no gas dripped out. I tried splitting the fuel pump but wasn't really sure what to look for so I put it back together. Im leaning towards a pump but am not quite sure. There seems to be a fuel supply issue in my opinion. An ideas? Oh ya, it's full of gas and the pickup is submerged too.

How is the main fuel filter, partial filled with gas or full?

I am going to hijack this thread instead of starting my own. I have the exact same issues on my Liquifire. I am thinking the fuel pump on mine but want a second opionion. All the line in the tank and out is new. But my fuel filter is just barely filling up. That is why I am writing here because that was asked.
Thanks

Snow7,
A new filter will only be about 1/4 to 1/2 full with fuel. As the filter cloggs up, it fills up more. Do you have the oem 5 plate fuel pump or a newer style? Did you install a new ball check valve in the tank?

Yes there is a new valve in the tank. It runs great for about 5 mins then runs out of fuel. If it sits it will start and run again. I pulled the line off the carbs and not much fuel comes out when pulling the rope. It still has the original style fuel pump

Run the sled till it quits again

Immediately after it dies ………

Squirt fuel in carb and see if it fires

Check for spark if it doesn’t ...
.if it does .......pulse line..... check valve ...fuel line off fitting.... bad pump
smoked piston.

Then we can go from there!
