High Idle

Post by Danzig »

Guys..

I have this 82 Liquifire running, however the idle just will not setting down, its consistently at 3000 or more and will climb to 4000. I am running it with the air box off...never had this problem before. I just put new crank seals in it. The only thing that is eating at me it the timing mark on the stator, I set it exactly where it was when I took it apart and that was a little advanced or counterclockwise of the mark or seam on the case halves. I have the idle screws backed out so far they could fall out of the carbs.

I am thinking I have an air leak...

How are the cables set just on top of the carbs?
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

I guess I could back them all the way off and go from there, never thought of that till now. Slides are closed enough in my opinion, but...

Are the slides bottomed out inside the carb?

Recently had the same problem with the Cross Country. Problem was slides were too high. Also, check throttle cable routing to make certain that's not the problem.

A really quick check to make sure the cables aren't too tight and the slides are bottoming out is just to give the throttle a quick flip when the engine isn't running. When the slides hit the idle adjustment screw there is a real metalic click you won't hear if the cables are bottoming out first.

I know that metallic knock and I can hear it on both carbs, screws backed out no knock. I am very aware of the cable routing with the dash up/dash down, it doesnt matter, pulled on the choke plungers thinking one may have been hanging up, no such thing. I will take the adjustment out of the cables and start there. You know, I was trying to feel the slides move up and down with the idle adjustment screws and wasnt really satisfied with the performance, I couldnt really feel the slides moving in any direction. I even pulled the slides out looking for issues with the springs. I will be taking the adjustment out of the cables and start there. I will report my findings.

Which cables? Does that mean the idle is back down?
