Twin carb cyclone

Post by ihengineer76 »

Here is a couple pictures of my latest completed project. It is a 1978 Cyclone 340 chassis with a 76 440 powerplant. The project started with a 76 cyclone that I bought a few years back. The chassis was pretty beat, but it had 1800 miles on it. I had a parts 76 LF 440 engine with carbs and decided to try to put the LF carb setup on the cyclone. I got the the changeover done and it ran well, but was plagued by issues of a beaten and neglected sled. This fall I found the 78 chassis that had a partial motor and no clutches. It was in very good shape and had been stored inside. I pulled the engine from my 76, rebuilt it, cleaned up the intake and ports, and then put it in the 78 chassis. I also switched the gears to the 1.68 ratio for more top end. So far, I have put about 35 miles on it this season and am happy so far. There are still a few tweaks to do with jetting, clutching, and maybe modifying the suspension for deep snow.

Ihengineer76, I just finished stuffing a polaris track and suspension in my 76 twin carbed Cyclone. I'll test it tomorrow! It's probably going to mess with my clutching but oh well!! Good luck with yours!

That looks real good. How much more travel does this give you?

Newbe here. Does the Cyclone have a rubber track or did you change it out along with the Polaris suspension?
I have a 88 Indy suspension I might put in the LF

Took the cyclone out for a quick spin today. Had it set too stiff so I will adjust tomorrow and put a gas shock on that I found in my stash. I haven't measured the travel yet but at least 5 inches more than I had!! The drive shaft is a 82 LF hex shaft with JD 8cog 2:52? Pressed on. These are smaller than the polaris drivers for they will fit the tunnel and same ratio to fit track. Hope this helps!

The sled looks great! I had done a Trailfire suspension conversion on the sled that the motor came out of, and it worked well. I didn't do it to this sled, because I didn't want to put any new holes in the tunnel.

Thanks, but to do this conversion you will have to drill holes. Measure twice and drill once! Having a early Polaris tub with susp. you are going to use helps alot with layout.
