Kelsey Hayes Woes

Post by WinnipegStPaul9 »

When pulling the 340/S off of the trailer before heading for the HOF ride I noticed it would hardly pull itself. After better inspection I discovered that the brake puck would not retract by itself. I consulted with a couple of good KH guys who gave me ideas but my problem turned out to be unique (of course duh!! it's ME).

This diagram is from the 340/S service manual. Note that screw #1 is supposed to hold everything together thru puck #12. It didn't.

Here's the culprit. This screw had backed out and was loose in the caliper.

This is a wavy washer. Note the corrosion at the 12 oclock level. I think it is useable again. One KH guy said he'd never seen a "split" washer previously but the diagram shows it is supposed to be split.

At this time I've had the hole in the puck tapped and the threads are good. My problem is finding a 1/4-20 screw that is a little less than 1/2" long. I have a Polaris caliper coming, if it fits I might use that instead.

I would thread a nut onto a screw and then grind it down to the length you need it. When you back the nut off, it sets the threads on the end so they are right.

There would not be room inside the caliper for a jam nut setup.

The nut on the screw is not for a jam nut, but rather to deburr the threads after you grind it down. You remove the nut and use a file on the end of the screw to smooth the edges before installation.

Todd, I think he meant after cutting to the desired length, remove the nut which should clean the threads. I have used this method in the past before discovering friends with cool shop equipment LOL.

Update, Roger Jordan (Jekyll) is sending me a Polaris caliper to look at and T-roy (HoosierDeereMan) is going to work on a screw. It's GREAT to have friends.

MCM would have the screws but you would need to buy a box of 50.

Don you old tightwad!

I get my specialty fasteners from this place,http://www.allensfasteners.com/ they have no minimums. See if they have what you are looking for. The shipping on a small number may still make that box of 100 look better.

http://www.allensfasteners.com/detail.a ... ct_ID=0301 Less than 10 cents each.

Don,

I'm with JDT on this one. Fastenal is one of my favorite stores. This is only one of several 1/4"-20 x 1/2" listed on their website. http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/de ... ?sku=27661

According to their website the closest is:

575 N Line Street
Columbia City, IN 46725
P: (260)244-4497
F: (260)244-4604

I have never had an issue ordering 1 or 2 of some odball size fastener in our local store.

80 Liquifire (purchased 2011 ~ Not running - I officially have a problem now)
83 Snowfire (purchased 2014 father/son restoration project)
78 Spitfire ~ sold (should have been shot for this)

Well, I only drive by Fastenal about 10 times per week. I guess what you're saying is that I should not drive by but instead stop in??? :bonk:
