$16 Temp Guage for the ole Liquifire

I came across this temp guage and figured for the $16 it was worth it just for the sending unit alone. What I like is the fact its electronic instead of the stock copper core wire JD used. It took a bit to make it all fit though, the fitting that screws into the motor had to be tapped to the correct thread pitch, and I had to make a ring to support the guage in the dash. For some reason even my stock guage was loose and it bugged me. Anyhow, its all hooked up and works great! Looks not too bad IMO, I will be painting the chrome ring flat black so it matches the other guages. $16..... cant go wrong.

I haven't been able to ride with it yet it but it does work. I wish it started at 50 F and went from there but none of the gauges seem to. What do the JD range style guages operate at?

factory gauges are just a colored back face, no numbers on it at all for the 80 + series L-fires

So going by Matt's part number on the guages, Its fair to assume the increments are the same on both of those guages, just different faces. So when the LF is warm and at operating temp either guage will be almost on the peg. They also look to be the old style copper core wire setup aswell?

The needle should be betwwen 10 and 1 o'clock.

They are capulary gauges yes.

Question.... Is you electronic gauge capable of running on AC or just 12VDC?

Yes it should be, but look at the temps between 10 and 1.. does your engine get that hot? And Whats on the other side of the voltage regulator, its still AC unless it goes through a rectifier? That being said, I have no idea... I hope its ok to run the way I have it hooked up. Electronic seems the way to go.

If the guage will work on AC/DC you will be fine.
If it is DC only you will need a diode.

LC sleds do not run as hot as say a car.

Ok folks here a picture update. The guage is now painted to match and I also redid the handlebars for good measure. What do you think?

Looks good! The bulb that lights its would be the only part that would be affected by the difference between the voltages. If it hasn't blown, you are probably fine. The gauge itself does not take power to run it. It is based on a thermocouple. Two dissimilar metal wires are joined and create a voltage difference that causes the needle to move.
