Ported high compression heads and tune pipes

had anyone done this? apperently there is a 25-30 hp gain to be had with a few mods, including 38 mm carbs head and tune pipes, just wondering before i invest the cash, are these gains realistic?

What is the purpose of this sled? If you plan on using it as a trail machine, then run it in stock form. You have to look downstream of the engine. You will need to re-tune your clutches, and find a way to get that power to the snow. A stock track spins like crazy with a stock sled. A motor that has been heavily modified is much more likely to self destruct. If you don't have your jetting right and it burns down, then there goes all your time and money in porting the jugs. A better investment is getting your stock motor to run reliably every time and maybe put some into the ride and handling components. Just my opinion.

a very well thought out opinion, ive already got it on 38 mm carbs and unipods, and bought it with tuned clutchs and 340 trailfire gears and am about to pick the track, to help with the traction problems it has, its a very fast realiable sled aat the moment, i was thinkin about investing in a second engine and 108 drive clutch and perminently replace the driven clutch with one out of a sportfire, i was jsut thinking about 1/4 mile races on the lakes next winter, i would love to see this old LF bite away at the new sleds

The Trailfire gears will be hurting your traction.

My 81 has the Sportfire helix and a slight gear change. As long as the trail is groomed few new sleds can leave me.

As long as it is mostly stock parts then a melt down will not be too costly. If it is running good and reliable I would leave it alone.

Now if it was going to be a 2-3 weekend toy for the lakes. Then I would do some more tweaking.

I believe AAEN has documentation on how to tune up the Liquifire with their pipes. 25-30 HP sounds pretty optimistic though. Maybe if balanced & blueprinted, ported, the whole 9 yards.

Correct Matt.

There is much more work and expense to do than just bolting on a few parts to gain that much HP.

I think That Racing Girl did a full write up on this a couple of years ago.
Cost and risks, in my opinion, outway any potential benifits.

Traction will always be an issue for a rider.

Now if the goal is a 600 ft ice racer than that is different story.

Ice racing does come to mind quite often, i live near some ice ovals, and a few friends of mine have started building ice oval racers, one with a 500 indy another with a 600 artic cat, ive been thinking about getting in the mix

No way that the Aaen package will pick up 30 hp. That is almost 50% over stock. Leave these poor things alone and appreciate them for what they are. Most "high performance" tuning leaves them slower than stock. Even in full race trim a SS500 Rev will tow a Liquifire down the lake.
