There were 2 different JDX8 electric start kits. What is the serial number on your machine?

I assume the 1972 is a typo, as X8s were made in '73, '74, and '75.

The Jd sleds were all built prior to the years they where sold ! So a date of 72' will make your sled a 73' model year ! It should have boggie suspension ! Engine should be a KEC 440/21 reed engine. :usa: Hope this helps!

Ok, you've got a '73 X8. The only real difference in the kits would be that a '75 X8 or 800 would have a different battery box because of the tuned exhaust.

So...if you are looking for used. The 600s generally had e-start on them. Getting the entire setup would be the best of course. You need the starter motor, and there is generally a shim between the starter and the engine end plate. ( you can use the cover that is now on your sled to make one ). You need the battery box, and on it are mounted the solenoid, rectifier, and circuit breaker, and then you need the wiring harness that goes from the solenoid to the plug in the main harness.

New is going to be harder. If anyone has a complete NOS kit I haven't heard them bragging about it, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I have picked up NOS and used components off e-bay over the last 10 years.

Ed Poet is listing starters: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-JOHN-DEERE- ... 73&vxp=mtr

Hope that helps

Thanks JDRob and Brian..... I will update my signature to reflect the correct year of the JDX ...Makes total sense what you say.... I looked at the starter link you sent Brian and sent him an email... Asked him for the year it came from but I'm thinking that the 400 and JDX used the same tunnel, I could be wrong, maybe you guys could shed some light after I get a reply from this guy..

Thanks again

The year doesn't matter, that starter and box should work. The starter fits all the Kioritz engines. The box will work on all the mid-mounts except the tuned pipe '75s.

So here is the reply :
This is for 1972-1977 400 with a CCW KEC340/4,/5 KEC340/22 WILL ALSO FIT 500'S & 600'S WITH CCW KEC440/4,/5 if your JDX8 has the original motor
CCW KEC 440/21-KEC440/22- KEC440/22A
I'm not sure if it will fit I only have the parts catalogs for the 400/500/600.
So Brian I don't have a service guide for the 4/5/600's, I only have one for the JDX.... It calls for the ring gear/flywheel part # Am52511.

Do you think the one for the 400 will fit?

Yes, it will work.

I have e-start on a 72 400, a '74 400, and a '74 X8. I installed all of them.

You may have to use your cover to make the shim, but otherwise it should all bolt up. The flywheel and breaker plate are probably Koukosan, not the Denso you have on your X8, so they are spare parts. Doesn't matter, all the Kioritz engines came with the ring gear on the flywheel ( except the race sleds ).

Like I said, for the most part, the e-start components are all the same between the Kioritz engined sleds.

If you want it, I'd get it bought. PayPal would be my preferred method of payment, but no matter how you do this ( unless you pick the parts up ) there is some risk.

Sent buddy a message on Craigs List the same day as you said it would fit Mar 15....He replied twice saying he still had it and he would check on a price for shipping........Then I never heard from him again.... Sent a few followups but no response.... Guess someone local payed the cash and he didn't have to ship it.... Sooooo
I'm still looking :wall: ..... Maybe he will email me... Maybe
