Engine on my Troybilt tiller lost a connecting rod last fall. So fix it in the spring: Short block or whatever, Briggs does not offer a short block for this model . It is an 8 hp on a troybilt tiller. Rather an expensive engine to replace. The rod went through the crankcase, a hole about 1" x 1.5". Can this hole be welded shut? The crank journal cleaned up good with the help of some hydrocloric acid, a new rod and the hole patched and good to go. Have any of you ever done this? Would like mto hear your thoughts. In patching should the piece be cast aluminum or would any flat stock aluminum work?

I have welded cold rolled aluminum to cast aluminum before. It holds up well if it is heated before it is welded. As far as welding a crank case? There is minimal internal pressure in that application. My only fear would be cracking do to the rough harmonics of a single cylinder. I guess my thoughts are: "If it doesn't work, what are you out of?"

I did have this welded, a neighbor does excellant aluminum welding, filled in a piece, looks great, replaced piston,rings, seals,and c-rod and it is mowing grass.
I wish you guys knew how to fix chain saws!

It is an 028WB stihl. Starts readily, can't keep it running, have had it running enough to adust H & L to no avail.
carb off and cleaned, ( two or three times), new kit, needle lever set flush, pulse line ok, new fuel line and filter. Flywheel off , checked points, filed a bit, seal on that side was clean, looked good. A lot of fuel (very wet at muffler). What have I missed? This is not my saw so don't know the entire history.
PS . That motor was on my tiller, I have been doing to much mowing!

I would start by raising the needle lever up to about 0.020" above the carb body. it would seem as though it is running until it floods itself out, then stalling. Let us know the results.

Thanks for trying to help but that didn't work at all! Fired one time and spark plug is drenched. This is a tillotson carb, the walbro does use that setting.
Could the spring (pop off) pressure be too low?

O, its a Tilly.... That makes a pretty big difference lol! Thats the next thing i would look at. Perhaps trying to go the other way with your pulse arm adjustment as well. I assume at very least a needle came in the new kit. Did a new seat come with it as well?

No--- No such luck. I have not seen a seat in any of these type of carb kits.

Ok, if it was me, i would would try to resurface the seat. Typically all you have to do is take a golf tee and insert it into the seat. Twist it about a half a dozen times, and you will have a new sealing surface on your inlet seat.

The seat holds gas, won't go thru until the lever is pushed down. Compression tested, ok, replaced a crankshaft seal that looked bad, tried differant H & L needle settings. Found a manual online for that HU carb and followed instructions and trouble shooting. What is still wrong? Should I try a different carb? I doubt the one on my 290 stihl would work.
