Hey all. I recently started working on another '74 400 and am trying to get spark in the motor. I know it must either be points or coils, but does anyone know how to check the coils to see if they are good? Any insight appreciated.
thanks
Adam

Thanks for that, i think i already read that post in the past but a refresher is always good. But how would you go about testing the coils?

The Service Manual shows coil testing being done with a Merc-O-Tronic Analyzer.

This tool alowed you to test fire the coil at established amperages to determine its condition. Without this tool, you seem to be limited to resistance checks.

To check the resistance of the coil. You connect one end of your ohm meter to the plug wire terminal, the other to the steel laminations. ( they call this coil continuity, I think it is also secondary resistance )

You can also check it with your meter connected to the laminations and the other to the feed wire. ( Primary resistance )

Your '74 600 should have a Kokusan system.

The secondary resistance should read 5.2 ohms +/- 10%

The primary resistance should read 1.65 ohms +/- 10%

Can anyone confirm I have this right?

Yes, '74 400 is what I meant to type :ph43r:

The other way of dealing with this situation, would be to use the time honored tradition of replacing the coil in question with a "known good unit", and observing the results.

Most likely you need to clean the points. This is very common on old sleds that have been sitting. Ive never haad an external coil fail on a ccw but it does not hurt to check.
