Spring & summer 1973 Chaparral FB SS GD Clone project

Post by ICCSF 108 »

This is my summer project that I started in Mo. in the spring, & then mocked it up ( just the tunnel, engine, pan & hood ) in MN. so it could be taken to our engine builder in Little Falls MN. so when he gets our other 650 Chap motor ( I'm calling this a motor cuz it'll be faster than an engine, LOL ) built & dyno'd with the dyno pipes he can then place them under the hood, this project I hope to have done for next summers grass drags with Tucker as driver..

Very unique project there Kenny.

Two questions...

What is the output of the "motor" as pictured?

That track has four sets of drive lugs?

Todd,
The 650 Chap 3 cyl Free Airs were rated a 127 HP, 440 Triple Free Airs was rated at 90 HP in 72-73 but not many had that much, I did hear a story about the Chap Factory pulling over 130 out of one of there 650 Free Airs. not sure how much there 440 & 650 Liquid Triples pulled? I do know that the 650 Liquid Triples had so much power that they were snapping off the mounting tabs on the cyl's, so the teams that had the liquids had to redo the cyl's & heads so they could use long crankcase to cyl stud bolts that came up all the way through the heads to hold the cyl's in place..
We are having that done to our 650 Free Air motor so we don't have any problems, Motor/Engine parts are getting to hard to find to start destroying them. Even though I do have a few motor parts laying around.... :silenced:
Scott at HEWTEC is also building us a Fireplug CDI for this sled also, hopefully we will be able to try the surface gap plugs then to see if we get any advantage??

The track has 2 double rows of drive cogs in the middle inside & a row of single drive lugs on each of the outsides, 6 rows total, size is 15 X 121 X 2:52 pitch.
Not sure which drive clutches We'll be using but we have quit a selection to choose from.
Comet 102C, 108EXP, HRP Quad Cam billet Clutch, or Quick-Shift Magnum ( a remake of the old Duclo clutch's ).. We'll probably us a Polaris driven, but I'm sure we'll be testing others.

Very cool project Kenny. I remember seeing it in the back of your truck in Owatonna and all I can say is wow that's a cool project. Btw guys, that titanium axle is killer in person!

Todd, I'm hoping that with all the motor mods once completed & on the dyno & with custom pipes this puts out close to about a third more HP
