Kioritz 440/5 Pistons?

Post by Craig114 »

I recently picked up a 1975 JD 600 off Kijiji for $100.It's rough, But I wanted a good winter project and seeing as I have lots of my time on my hands these days, I thought this would be a good one. I am going to tear it down and do the crank seals, As I can see from this site that it is important to do that before you even start it for the first time. I had thought that while I was in the process of doing the seals, I would hone the cylinders and install new pistons, rings, etc. I have looked at a million websites and ebay, And can't find any pistons for this thing. Did I pick the one model/motor that these parts are hard to find? I see other guys on the site were looking in the past, Just wondered if there was any out there.
Thx. :canada:

Unfortunately Craig you did pick the one that parts are hard to find. I looked for a year before I found pistons for mine.
It would be cheaper to find an older Kioritz 440 to put in it rather than find pistons for that engine.

When replacing the crank seals, make sure you put a new fan belt on.( the reason I needed to find pistons).

What is the compression on the engine?

If it is 115 lbs or over I would not worry about finding pistons. just reseal it, replace fan belt and drive on.

Ring sets show up here and there. Someone here on the site had some, but I can't remember who.

How many miles are showing? Seems like most of the 00/JDX sleds got parked before the Kioritz engine was wore out.

So today I tore it down and changed the crank seals. I cleaned the points with emery cloth, And then reassembled everything. I stuck the motor back in the sled, And then did a compression test on it. The compression was 110 on the mag side, and about 115 on the PTO side. When I checked the spark, I had spark on both plugs, Although the PTO side was weaker. After a few pulls on the recoil, I went back to having no spark on the PTO side. I took things apart again, And cleaned the points with a nail file. Sure enough, The same things happened again. I repeated this process about 5 times and got the same result. I switched the wires coming from the points and condensers going to the coils, And sure enough, The other cylinder had good spark, And the opposite had none.

My questions are: Is 100 PSI enough compression to have this thing run decent?
The second is, Is it possible the points need to be cleaned more? I think I've done a good job, But....
Also, What should the gap be on the points?, And which set of points controls which cylinder?
Hopefully if I can chase down this spark issue I can get this thing started tomorrow. It fired a couple times tonight with the weak spark, But I wondered why the spark dies off after a few pulls. Very strange. :wall:
Thanks for the input gentlemen.

Originally, the ignition was wired so that "white was right" or white went to the mag side.

From what you are describing, I'm wondering if you might possibly have a bad condenser on the side with the spark that goes away.

I'm with Brian also. Condensor.

As for the compression concern, it my raise up some when you get it to run.
You may have ring issues from sitting so long.

I wouldn't be all that concerned about the compression either. It seems like compression gauges are a little inconsistent too. I've tested my $40 gauge against a high priced one and mine reads 10 lbs. too high. The last one I had was 10lbs. low. being pretty close from side to side is great and like said before the rings may have to seat themselves again.
