NOS Liquifire Hood
This hood is in great shape and has never been painted. There are no cracks or chips on it anywhere. This has the open vent near the windshield so it is correct for an 80 or 81. I have too many hoods hanging on the wall as it is, so I have decided to let this go before it falls down a breaks or something. I need $150 for it, and I don't want to ship it, but will work with anyone to help get it to where you are. Thanks much!

I thought only 80's have the open vents with a cover held on by pop rivets. I have 2 81's and I swear the slots are intact. Will look tomorrow because I'm too lazy to wander out to the sled shed tonight.

Re: NOS Liquifire Hood
AXS, you're right about the vents. I just looked at some pictures of an 81 I had, and it had the closed vents. So it's correct for an 80. As far as the paint goes, it hasn't ever been painted. As far as I'm aware of, there were no companies that made repops of these hoods. If it isn't NOS, I don't know what you would call it. It has a sticker inside it with JQ9614 on it. I will take some closer pictures of it tomorrow to show that none of the mounting holes have ever had a fastener through it, and show that it is bare material on on the surface.

What's the red stuff on the primer. I've never seen a primered NOS hood either.

What was that line from Used Cars?
"Yellow paint? No Ma'm, this car was not a taxi. That is yellow primer."
My guess is it is in fact NOS but was scrathed or had some surface issue so the dealer had it refinished but after the primer was sprayed it was set asside and forgotten.
By the way Used Cars is the funniest movie ever made. The Money Pit is a close second.

Re: NOS Liquifire Hood
"Marshall" (I think that was his name) on this site did repop a fiberglass hood or two. Over the summer a few of us saw a "NOS" hood that we think may be his sitting up at Hudon's sled salvage up in NY. It doesn't quite look right and it's pretty heavy compared to original. However that one was black too.
JDT's idea makes sense - it got damaged in shipping or storage, got fixed and re-primed. Don't know why the didn't finish the job though.

Re: NOS Liquifire Hood
Well, here are a few more pictures. Sorry that a couple aren't really clear. The camera wanted to focus on everything but what I was trying to get. I wanted to show that the mounting holes have never had anything in them. It also has the mold marks as can be seen in the picture of the inside of the hood to put to bed any of the notions that its not an original Deere hood. As far as the red goes, it looks to me to be glazing compound or a light filler of some kind. The problem with the idea that it was fixed and re-primed is the fact that it isn't primed. There is no over-spray anywhere. All of the holes and cut-outs have bare material showing on the edges. You can see where the sharp edges from the mold were smoothed off with bare material underneath. The best I can figure is that it was set aside to fix a couple mold blemishes, got the filler lightly applied, and stopped there. They didn't even finish grinding down the cut out opening for the vent near the windshield. On all the other hoods that I have, this area is smoothed down. This thing is a bit of a mystery.

I could be wrong on this but I was sure late production 80's had the vent filled in. Could be a pre-production or a paint shop test dummy.
Re: NOS Liquifire Hood
That would make this a prototype hood, which increases the value considerably!

Hi Guys,
Not exactly sure what IHE has there, but the NOS Dator-lite hood I had a mold lifted from, is in grey gel-coat. It's the only NOS Deere hood I've seen like that, so there certainly could be others. Maybe it was a "second" and not painted or such.

Or...................someone stripped and primed it to airbrush a Led Zeppelin mural on it! It was 1980 after all.

Re: NOS Liquifire Hood
JQ9614 wouldn't happen to be an internal part number before its painted and decals are applied. Maybe this hood escaped from the factory before it was painted.

Re: NOS Liquifire Hood
Joe, you hit the nail on the head with the surface of it being in grey gel-coat. There is a grease pencil number on it also. I will check out what it is in after dinner. Nick, I've searched, but haven't found what the JQ9614 number is yet. I think you're right about it being an internal part number. Where I work, we have a lot if internal part and sub-assembly number for things before they get sent out.JoeRainville wrote:Hi Guys,
