78LF,
Finding a good 295/S or 340/S CDI is a tall order. Even if you find one in working condition it probably won't last long as they weren't very reliable. Seems like because of their age and after a few heat cycles from use they short out internal. I would buy a Hewtech fireplug CDI. Scott will include the connector ends like used on the later Prestolite units found on the 76 and 77 model Deere sleds to make it plug and play. Very reliable and you won't regret it. If you are restoring a 340/S and want that original look. Bob at Image Interprises can get them rebuilt. Just be aware the red and white coil leads will be reversed for Mercury specs when it comes back. It also will not have the original Prestolite sticker on the cover.

Re: wtb cdi for 340/s
Jim Fett has some NOS ones. He advertises on Vintage Sleds Classifieds every so often. I don't have his number or anything. I bought one from him for my 340/s restoration. I have a snow stuff one on my 340/s right now that works and I'm going to sell. I just wanted original.

Shaun, I'd do like Troy said purchase the HewTek if this is a rider, also send him the stator to rewind also.. Just ask the guys that switched already..
By the way you still interested in that tunnel I have? If so I need to get it out & get you some pictures of it..

Re: wtb cdi for 340/s
Hi Kenny, yes I am still interested in the tunnel.
If I understand this right, basically I could take the round connectors, from say a 1977 liquifire, wire that to the 340/s and then I could used the cdi from the 77 liquifire. I do have a NOS cdi for a 77, I also have a NOS stator but I would assume it would be different on the 340/s.

Re: wtb cdi for 340/s
To the best of my knowledge, all the Prestolite stators are the same. The CDI boxes have different plugs, but are interchangeable otherwise.

Re: wtb cdi for 340/s
Brian, the prestolite CDI box I bought is the correct one for a 340/s. It is not the same one sold by DK Trader. I'm going for show sled and not a rider. For a rider the Hewteck is what I'd go with.

Re: wtb cdi for 340/s
Shaun, The Stators could be the same but with the different plugs that would give it a different JD part #. The problem a few of us found was that even the NOS stators are on the low side when you ohm them ( I had like 3 or 4 NOS 77+ stators & a few used 340/S ones & all but 2 were under JD specs & of the 2 only 1 was over the min. ) that is why all the guys went to the Hewtec rewound stators & his CDI box.. that took care of all there problems..
I just ordered one of his " Fire Plug " CDI's for my Grass Dragger..
Now if your looking to build a Trailer Queen like Duane is then I would stick with the OEM style.
I'll get that dug out next week as I'm heading to Tulsa OK. to a gun show on Fri.
