340/5 mag crank bearing?

Post by Spitfiremike »

I'm just wrapping up a resto on a 74 400 I pulled the crank seals to swap them out and the mag bearing outer race turns in the case. The bearing is clean not discolored, most importantly it is free and not seized? So my question is how can the bearing outer race turn in the case if it's not seized or never has been? Is this common? I have a lot of knowledge on the new breed stuff and engines in general, however this puzzles me. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Only thing I can think of is either a bearing OD not at specs, the ID of the crankcase not with-in specs, This could be caused by a bent or out of specs mag side throw, which would cause a wiggle in the bearing & wear out the bearing contact surface in the case halves.. Put a dial indicator on the mag side shaft & see how far out it is compared to the PTO shaft..
