1979 to 1980 trailfire resto

Post by buckeyetrailfire »

Hey guys, Here is my story. My wife's Grandfather passed away 5 years ago and he had this 1979 trailfire 440 with 1200 miles on it that had been sitting in the barn for 15 years plus. One day my Father Inlaw called and asked me if I wanted anything from Grandpa farm. Guess what I wanted. My wife said your not dragging that rusty thing home. Guess what I dragged home. So I got it home drove through the car was to clean all the corn stalk debris and years of farm crap off of it. clean the gas tank out , installed new spark plugs. So at the first snow fall at night I pulled it out of the garage with my wife and kids and the neighbor watching I fired it up (it wasnt running real good) jump on and headed down the street ( WOW it runs ) I got 10 houses down and it died and it wouldn't restart. So I pushed it home with the help of my neighbor-Thanks Brad. I got to poking around on the internet and found JDsled.com. Wow more guys out there like me-I'm HOOKED, started reading and with the tons of info you guy have put on the site It now runs great. I have resealed the engine, new fuel lines, fuel pump, filter. new shocks,installled a NOS track. I also bought a 80 340 trailfire for my kids-next years project. I guess I'm really hooked now. I recovered the seat and added a tach. But there is still one issue- the RUSTY tunnel. Two years ago I bought a 1980 aluminum tunnel and I just started to do the swap. I have replaced all the track drive bearings. painted the bulkhead and I'm in the process of repainting the hood now.What a lot of sanding. I have bought a pair of NOS TPR panels from Rob (jdrob) Thanks you guys for all your help and parts you have sold me. What a brotherhood this website has. Here are some picture :beers;

Yep, there's no turning back now, you have the disease. I keep telling my self I need to back off on the hobby a little, but that thought only lasts a day or two, and then I'm back working on sleds. I look at the hobby as more of therapy than a disease, at least that is what I tell my better half. Sled is looking great, keep the pics coming.

The Trailfire looks like it's coming along nicely! You should get plenty of compliments on the trails!

Well after 2 years its finally finished . cleaned and greased the rear suspension a couple of weeks ago( I have every nut and bolt off and back on of this thing). I got the decals on today WOW they really brighten the sled up. I didn't care to much for the green in the 80 decals so I decided to go with the 83 LX decals. Thanks Brock for the advise on what to decide on. Now I'm ready for St.Germain. Here are some pictures. Thanks to everyone in this club who helped me with this project.
