Mean Green

Post by ddub »

Hey guys, I have been working with John Deere Joe with regards to matching the mean green paint. I have to say, it's been a bit of a challenge. But I think I have a pretty good sample for you guys.

Joe sent me a NOS mean green part, the round part in the picture below. what has slowed me up a bit, is that I inadvertently threw the piece away. (bang head on work bench time), so I couldn't do a final comparison in good lighting after my sample dried. :bonk:

I am aware of the published color recommendation. I am going to say some things here contradict some published information. Please take it as my findings with my paint. I am not saying any recommendation is incorrect.

I mixed some Elkhart Green and another green that I found recommended. Now keep in mind, these findings are in MY paint line. You may have different results in different paint lines, especially on old colors. This is part of the problem of using a code. I could go deeper into why, but that we will talk about another day.

Here is what I found.

Image

Elkhart green is the top stick, the bottom stick was another recommendation that I found. Elkhart green is too yellow and not even the correct size of metalflake. I didn't use it even to base a color off of to tint with. The other green at least had the same flake. But the color really just wouldn't come around so I gave up on it. Trust me I tried. LOL The problem is that the base colors are just not correct. The color that I finally started with used totally different toners.

Here is the color that I sent to Joe Rainville to evaluate. It is now up against a Cyclone hood with the decal's removed.

Image

Now I will say that Joe, commented he thought the color was a bit dark. I am seeing the exact opposite here. Keep in mind, this color is spray sensitive especially as a single stage. Joe sprayed single stage, my sample is basecoat. His sample that he is matching to could be slightly different also.

After this picture, I have made a couple slight adjustments to this color, and I am going to start to market it.

Please understand that this does not mean that the formula is set in stone yet. I would call it a "beta" version. I am always open to constructive criticism of my colors.

If we find that we need to tweak the color some more as we compare to more original samples out there, I will.

Please understand though. This is not a code. This is a custom formula. I offer it in basecoat, 1k Acrylic and urethane. I also fill aerosols.

Now I am going to tell you guys one thing with this color. You will NEED to use a black undercoat. Whether it be a black sealer, primer, or groundcoat. I have heard this from other people for other brands of paint also on this color as well.

I wish to take some time here to thank Joe. He has been very helpful on this project.

If you guys have any questions, please post them, or contact me with them.

thanks for your time and this opportunity!

ddub, A good starting point to look at for 78 Green (cylone) is Nason GS292. No flake in this from the jobber;has to be added to suit individual spray style/equipment/shop enviroment.
Here's the disclaime; as with all codes, use at your own risk..........30 y.o. paints fade/outgass so you may not be happy with the results.......

G and G,

While I have access to Nason, it is not the brand of paint that I personally mix. The number you supplied is a DuPont number that doesn't "cross" into any competitive lines as it is a color map number. However, I do have the dupont colormap that has this chip so I can compare it to my color map so it may prove helpful.

Guys for the record Green and Gold has been very helpful with this endeavor in both the Ski-Doo and John Deere brands. Thank you Green and Gold.
