Need help on front drive train for 600

Post by afponiky »

Hi guys, I don't have a tech manual yet for the 600 and I'm stuck on putting the front drive gears/shaft on the 600.

Anyone willing to let me phone them and talk me through the assembly of it. I've looked at JDParts, and my Clymer book, but still I know something isn't right.

Thanks, Gary (GRP)

What's with the manual, you were waiting for one over a month ago?

Anyway:

First get the track shoved up in the tunnel as best you can. I think I stuck a chunk of 2x12 inside the track to hold it apart.

Assuming the drive sprokets are still on the shaft, install the pipe spacer on the splined end of the shaft. You may want to clean up the shaft and bearings and apply a bit of locktite, your call.

Now, straight from the SM:

Lubricate and install the O-ring over lower chaincase bearing. Install flangettes and bearings on the shaft.

IMPORTANT: Locking flanges on bearings must face splined end of shaft to obtain proper chain and sprocket alignment.

Place splined end of drive shaft in tunnel and drop other end into position.
( the SM is showing this with the sled inverted )
You also have to have the aluminum spacer installed on the very end of the shaft on the speedo drive end.

Secure lower chaincase bearing flangettes to the chain case with three cap screws. Do not tighten until opposite bearing is secured in tunnel.

IMPORTANT: Be certain O-ring is in correct position on bearing and between flangettes or oil leakage will result. Be certain gasket is in position between flangette and tunnel.

Insert speedo drive core into shaft. Bolt bearing flangettes, spacer, and speedo drive to tunnel with three bolts. Tighten securely.

Tighten splined end bearing flangette bolts.

Install spacer and drive sprocket on shaft. Install cap screw and washer to end of shaft with locktite. ( this bolt originally had a plastic dot on the threads to prevent loosening. but it only works once ) Tighten bolt to 30-38 ft-lbs.
