No low end on 76 340 cyclone
No low end on 76 340 cyclone
I know they are not a power house but but real doggy on low end. Real good midrange and top end. Got new primary spring going to try but just thought I would get a list of things to look at.

What is your idle speed?
What do your plugs look like?

Plugs look pretty good. Going to put some more miles on it to get a good plug reading.
Idle around 20. Starts and idles nice. Thinking clutching and not carb but looking for other ideas.

I like to see a faster idle.
May be loading up a little and has the burn off some excess before she comes alive.

Also, check to see if the proper clutch weights are on it.

Re: No low end on 76 340 cyclone
check to see where your belt is riding in the secondary clutch, if its below the secondary sheeves it is like statrting out in 3rd gear and you have a 5 speed. You want the belt about 1/8 inch above the secondary sheeves.

Good call. Now that you say that it may be a little low. I will have dig into how to adjust. Have not messed with older clutches for a while.

You don't adjust, it's time for a replacement. A new belt is considered 1-1/4 inch wide. When it wears down to 1-1/8 inch, it's time for replacement.fast823 wrote:Good call. Re: No low end on 76 340 cyclone
To better clarify, A new belt will ride up out of the secondary sheave as Danzig stated earlier. As the belt wears, it drops down below the outer edge and requires more engine torque to spin the secondary. The belt distance is adjustable also but this is an adjustment performed with JD alignment tool or suitable substitute.

Re: No low end on 76 340 cyclone
Belt riding slightly lower. Putting new spring in clutch tonight to try. Also cleaned clutch as it was real dirty and binding a little. Going to turn up idle a little also. Running 370 main jet and has "F" weights in.

A lot better low end. Just a small stumble on mid range. Blowing and cold out so did not do to much more tuning. Running BR9ES plugs and will check them when I can get some more miles on.
