Gas in Crankcase

Post by DLDeere »

The engine on my 1973 JDX8 runs but is missing on one side. Turns out there was quite a bit of gas in the bottom of the crankcase. Good spark, so a bit of a mystery. I've had this happen on the 300 and 400 too. I'm guessing there are many reasons why an engine might accumulate gas in the crankcase, but what might be a few of the most likely reasons? Thanks for the help!

Fuel pump or carb. Don't think you have a needle/seat but that's been the culprit on the cross country twice since I restored it. A little dirt under the needle and gas goes straight to crankcase. Pull plugs and then pull the recoil six hundred and fifty two times and everything should be fine.

Is it missing on the side the pulse line connects to? If so, I'd suspect a bad diaphragm in the carb.

The metering lever in the carb could be set too high. Is the engine running real rich?

Does your needle have a Viton tip? The aftermarket kits usually come with a Viton tipped needle. I have been told not to use these as they will leak by. If the original metal tip needle looks okay, I always try to re-use them.

PTO side was the one not firing. Pulse line is connected on the mag side. Not sure what tip is on the needle but will keep that in mind if problem reoccurs. Also will check metering lever again if necessary. Doesn't seem to be running rich. Good spark plug color on the good side. Sounds like the most common reason for this is too much gas coming in through the carb, either from metering lever set to high or bad tip on the needle.

Would a bad oil seal or bad seal around the lower crank cause gas to accumulate instead of getting pushed into the cylinder?

You are correct Howard.

Gasket or seal leak would affect transfer.
