Liquifire Airbox

It probably won't but figured i'd ask. Will a late 70's 440 airbox from a liquifire fit a 80's 440 liquifire?

No, the latter Liquifire has bigger carbs than the earlier and different mounts.

A complete NOS 80 airbox just sold on ebay, $160.00, with original JD shipping box. The 80 models had a different air screen device than the rest, but this particular kit had the U - shaped intake hose that arrived later, so the screen and hose must have been a running change situation. I don't recall ever seeing an early intake hose that sourced air from under the gauge pod like the ones shown in the parts book.

I believe the tube and hose were swapped out in one of the update programs. Think the fuel pump relocation, headlight foam seal, ect. were part of the same update.

I found it interesting that this particular package arrived in the same box with only part of the update, the U - shaped hose, when it would seem likely both pieces would have been swapped at once.

I wonder if it came from Deere as a kit. In the mid 90s I purchased an air box from my local Deere dealer. Everything came as individual components, with the exception of the plastic clip that was packaged with the airbox. They were unable to get the screen type tube so I ended up with the original tube,just like the one on eBay. At the time I thought $30.30 for just the plastic box was terrible....if I only knew.

It's all listed as separate components in the parts book. I thought it odd to see everything supposedly in one box, but perhaps it was just tossed in that box and sat around for 30 years.

Air box
I have a new air box in the box with part no. opened it up (pulled staples) only to find plastic air box only no insides, or boots part. No. on JD part box is AM54759 listed in Parts catalog pic as no 8 AM 54759 ABSORBER. Will sell for decent price + shipping cost.
Also may sell Airbox my son gave me that is complete, looks the same, just dirty and is sitting in my shop by a secondary clutch.

Just throwing it out there, could you ditch the airbox and run an air filter on the carb like Horicon Joe does on the Liquifire II? If the airboxs are scarce and a pain the butt to work around why not delete it? Any thoughts?

If you are asking about the Fire-Series Liquifire and it still has the power-jet carbs on it, no you cannot run it without the airbox. Now if you swap out the carbs for standard-non power-jets, you can do what ever you want. The power-jet carbs need the designed velocity of air passing thru them, which is achieved with the air box, to work properly.

The air box is not a pain in the butt with the short carb flanges.
