Re: I 500 Coverage
Congratulations to Joe, Chris, and Wade. To have the nerve to even attempt this race and then have the skill to finish is testament to your abilities!
Todd, thanks for the write up. We have all wondered why the vintage guys didn't get any media time. Now we know.
Brian Lindner had been sending me text updates all afternoon on the guys progress.
Well done guys! Way to represent John Deere!

Re: I 500 Coverage
Congratulations to the J.D. Drivers for finishing the Race ! glad to see Rainville made it---never actually met Joe but he did stop by my house and pick up a sled that I had sold to a guy out East a couple years ago--- I wasn't home at the time but I have kinda kept up with his effort to finish this race the last couple years --so I am glad to see his dedication paid off for him this year---Again---Nice to see the Deere Colors still crossing the finish lines at Cross country races after all these years---Go Deere !!!!

Re: I 500 Coverage
Checking out the USXC final results on their website not a single John Deere is listed as a DNF in the Vintage Class, and one DNF in the Vintage Legends so that makes the so that makes the overall finish percentage of John Deere's at 75%
Arctic Cat is 53%
Kawasaki at 50%
Polaris at 73%
Yamaha at 0%
kind of makes a Man proud!!!

Re: I 500 Coverage
Hopefully there will be some more good pics. All I could get were cell phone pics and I almost missed joe crossing the finish line. Now all we need to to get a jd in the winner circle. I will be there again next yr. It will be fun as always despite the cold weather. Even if Joe's truck won't start...

It is absolutely all about sled prep and also driver endurance training. However sometimes even a well-prepped sled will let you down.mn.deereguy wrote:Kind of makes a guy wonder if john Deere is just that good of a sled or the guys working on them and riding them are just that good!!!

Re: I 500 Coverage
First off I want to congratulate Wade Bennet and Chris Reeve and all the vintage I-500 competitors, as it was a pretty rough ride out there. I also can't thank our volunteer pit crew of Todd Shrup and Dustin Erickson enough for all their help. No doubt we all appriciated the support and kind words of the extended Deere collector family. When my stubborn sled wouldn't fire on the line, about 5 or 6 guys came over and helped bring her to life, including Maynard (Gumbofarmer) and Tom Shuster (JD Jock). Thanks guys!
About 20 of the 35 sleds that lined up for the third attempted at the Vintage I-500 survied to cross the line. It was a good, tough course with lots of hard wind blown drifts and unexpected challenges. I tried to remember all the good advice from the indpendant racers and ETD guys like "save the sled" and "you can't win it in the first 5 miles" but most of all I remember Brian Hitt's advice after he was the only Deere to finish the race in 2011: "Never give up!"
On Friday, I found my clutching was off, as the motor was over reving. I started with 46.5 gram weights in my ZR driver, but they were too heaving and limited RPM's to about 6,500. The 42.5 gram wieghts from Wahl were too light and let her rev to over 9 grand in the snow. Chris Reeve (#169) and his buddies suggested 43.5 gram if I could find them. The local Cat dealer had 44's and they were just about perfect as the sled could now easily bury the 80 mph speedo.
I was jetted stock for an 80 LF rated for 0 to 40 deg. It was about -10 at the start was going warm up to +10. I was going to hammer WFO on the river, but kept passing burned down sleds. So I kept a fast pace at 3/4 throttle, and held it wide open for long bursts, but did not want to join the carnage on the river. A total of 5 sleds didn't make it off there.
The sled basically help up pretty well but it did develop a few issues. First up was that I lost the brake before the first gas stop. The old reliable Willwood master cylinder had been challenging to bleed this year, but with Wade's help we got the air out on Friday before the race. About half way to the first gas stop, it needed three pumps to grab, then it was gone. For about the last 5 to 10 miles before the first gas stop, I could only go half throttle. She died out if you gave her any more gas than that, and I was down to 1/3 throttle as I pulled in. Turns out I was about out of fuel. On the last leg, it developed a chassis vibration that felt like a track drive sprocket was breaking up. The jackshaft bearing ate a groove in the jackshaft itself. Could have been prevented with a locking collar or such, but at least the shaft didn't snap.
I had some ameture problems and made plenty of mistakes that killed a lot of time. My googles were icing up constantly, and didn't stop until I tore holes in the foam the surrounds the lenses on the top and bottom. I miss judged three "kickers" that sent me flying off the sled but luckily the Liquifire landed on her ski's and waited for me to climb back aboard. But, for some reason she would not refire after the third get off just after the first gas stop. I had zero strength to puller the motor over, I could only get 2 or 3 pulls before I had to sit down and catch my breath. Out of frustration I pulled the plugs to check for spark. While the old plugs looked good and co-coa tan, I put new ones in anyway. For some reason, she liked that and refired after waisting around 20 minutes. Just as I put my helmet on and pulled on my gloves, the sweaper sled caught up to me, so I jumped on and hit it.
By then I was pretty beat up so I decided to calm down and focus on finishing the race. At the second gas stop, Todd asked me if I wanted to quit. I said "yes" but I am going that way as I pointed forward over the windshield. I was really bummed out when I caught up to Dave Chambers extacting his Invader from a ditch about 10 miles from the the finish.
Never was I more releved when I saw I crossed RT 59 and was close to the Casino. I got back on the throttle but decided I was too close to the end to mess it up, so I relaxed the pace just a bit so I could finally cross under the finish line banner...

Good work to all who competed on vintage sleds after I read this I called my friend and said next year we won't miss seeing the action and to see if it is something we should do ourselves his dad raced i500 on liquifires and liquidators back in the glory day so we always wanted to ourselves.

Re: I 500 Coverage
You have a very valueable resource in your friend's father.
Might I suggest insted of just going as a spectator that you guys build two sleds and show up as competitors.
I am sure that an "Old School" I-500 Veteran would keep you on track.
Some of us other guys will help with fuel stops.
This "New" I-500 is the most exciting thing since slide rail suspensions.
It is going to be fantastic!!
