Has anyone else had problems with setting up their recoil guts?
Like the 3 pawl springs and the 2 springs around the post, with the plate...ugh
I had rebuilt mine last year and it exploded the other day?
I'm pretty sure I put it together properly?
It's a frigging cookoo clock in there!
Are there any alternative recoil that would retro fit on? With another basket or something?
Or am I missing something?

Re: Recoil
Nope, they're a pain in the arse. I like to use, if you can find, the nylon type washers that are listed in the parts books. It seems to make it easier.

Re: Recoil
I have seen fresh rebuilds last ten pulls. I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it in person.

Re: Recoil
They can be a pain. The best is to memorize it like the back of your hand. I just don't think the JD recoils were well planned lol

This post makes me laugh because I know your frustration all to well! I have had some go back together in 10 minutes and some that took 4 hours, a six pack, and enough curse words to make a trucker blush! All I can say is you aren't alone in this.

Re: Recoil
I have found the 2 I worked on quite simple outside of not having a spring rewind kit. One is on my 1976 Liquifire, while pulling to start, the knot came out on the handle and the recoil digested it. My hands are not as strong as when I farmed, only problem. My 1980 Lquifire recoil sounded like it had sand in it, so I took it off on Saturday, left it in the house warming up to a better temperature too work on. Took it apart Sunday late morning, cleaned , lubricated, went together easy, put back on machine Sunday afternoon and started that beautiful sled. The 1980 was the hardest to remove, do to exhaust removal, and one bolt at the top of recoil. Now as I read comments, the question is how long will it last? I tightened that center bolt nut with lock washer good, and all spins good. Being that one has to remove the recoil to hand pull start it, if the recoil would happen to go... I think a cell phone call for a tow would be appropriate, or for a trailer.
PS Have redone 2 mikuni fuel pumps with diaphragm included and found 1 gasket needing a hole on the edge, and as someone stated before, do not forget to put the little hole where it belongs. Only 2 holes needed to make, and it works beautifully.

Re: Recoil
THE KAWI RECOILS JUST PLAIN SUCK @#$. Luckily enough I have a good friend that is really smart with them. I gave him a large box with 8+ kawi recoils all tore apart. He made 7 working recoils out of them with the help of a few new pawl kits and a roll of recoil rope. P.S. The 70's yamaha srx recoils are hands down the BIGGEST pain in the @#$. 10-20 pulls =rebuild!! HAHA!
