i have a 1976 340 liquifire with the kioritz motor. I have cleaned the tank, carbs, and put all new fuel lines on it. it will idle like a dream but farts and pops back through one carb when throttle is given to it. I pulled the reed valves out and they are not closing all the way. is there a way to fix this or a place to order some replacement reeds and gaskets

It is normal for the reeds to hang open. The maxium allowable "hang-open" distance is .060 inch. They should be able to close by lightly pinching them shut. I have seen NOS reed valves on ebay. All the CCW/kioritz reed engines use the same reed valves. If you are getting a lot of carb "spit-back" of gas and the reeds are hanging open, try reversing the reed on the mounting. Use lock-tite on the tiny screws or they could work loose and be sucked in to the engine.
As far as the engine poping, check the exhaust for blockage. Mice and rodents like to nest in the pipe.

Has anyone tried or thought of adapting the carbon fiber reeds like Boisen's or ect to vthese old sleds? There seem to be quite pronounced longevity and performance benefits from what I've heard......
Just a though.....

Hey Guys,
I've spoken to Boysen (sp?) face to face, and they were interested in looking at stock NOS reeds from the Deere's to repop. They thought with all this interest in vintage sleds, that they might be able to make money on the die to cut them.
Only bummer is that I do not have a dyno to measure the results and effects on jetting, etc. Might have to do some "Field Testing" on my 78 CC! RICH: care for a visit to NY for a tuning session?!
If there is interest, I am willing to pursue this one futher, as the guys actually didn't want any money up front, for once.
