Doggy 76 liquifire

Post by 440 rat »

Looking for some input on a doggy 76 liquifire 440. The carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt, all new fuel line, new jets, needles and polished the seats. Air screws are 1 and 3/4 turns out and the needles are on slot 2. It idles right around 1200 to 1500rpm and slowly drops after a few minutes. From an idle it seems sluggish but once you get it up around 4000rpm it clears out and runs pretty decent. Only thing I can think of is the clutch side choke cable doesnt work so maybe its allowing more gas to flow to that carb? I got another choke cable on its way, but if there's anything I can do in the mean time I'm all ears.

My fine tune manual says it should idle between 1800 and 2400 RPM. Clutch engagement is 3400 to 3600 RPM. A lot of people set the idle about 500 RPM under clutch engagement. If the idle is set to low they are boggy when you hit the throttle. They will also slowly die just as you described.

My 76 does the exact same thing, but mine idles near 2-2200 and any faster and it wants to creep away... I just moved the needle clips down then up.. No real difference either

A fresh new drive belt makes a world of difference. If your belt measures less than 1-1/8" width, change it.
Set your idle up just below the belt engagement.
Adjust the choke cable to allow about 1/8 inch free play at the carb.
Change the throttle slides to 2.0.
